Doc Johnson's Wonderland collection offers whimsically shaped, Alice in Wonderland inspired vibrators. Like the other pieces in this collection, the Mystical Mushroom hints at the theme without being too obvious. This clitoral vibrator's unique mushroom-shaped tip and detailed packaging make it stand out, while the sturdy silicone and variety of 10 functions make it easy to use.

Velvety smooth purple silicone makes up body this toy, while a few small plastic pieces (like the gold ring that separates the battery cap) help hold everything together. The silicone is odorless and tasteless, in addition to being hypoallergenic and pthalates-free. A few small, decorative ridges in the silicone may provide a bit of extra stimulation if angled just right, but their shallow depth keeps them from being especially noticeable during normal use.

Measuring just over 5" long in total, this little vibrator is easy to maneuver to your favorite spots, especially since the shape of the mushroom head lets you direct the strongest concentration of the vibrations easily. While the shaft is fairly rigid, the head is softer and flexible, and it can bend back and forth a bit. Although this toy technically can be used internally, the small size and angled head make it better suited to clitoral or other external use.

The unusual shape makes this a little more discreet than many vibrators, since the shape is only vaguely phallic. While it doesn't scream sex toy at first glance, most people would probably figure out its intended use after a moment. The small size, light weight, and included box make it well-suited for travel.

One button controls everything on this toy. Each click of the small plastic button built into the end of the base will switch the toy to a different function, and you can turn the vibrations off by holding the button down for two seconds at any time. Turning it back on will start it at the pattern following whichever you were just on, so you may have to scroll through several to get back to where you were.

This is a fairly quiet toy, on par with an electric toothbrush at its loudest settings.

The settings are a combination of 3 steady options and 7 patterns, which range from fast pulses to an unusual choice which can best be described as feeling the way "oontz oontz oontz" club music sounds. The vroom factor varies by setting, but most are in the 3-4 vroom range. The area near the control button lights up dimly in time with the vibrations.

Surprisingly, these vibrations are provided by a single AA battery, which is inserted by twisting off the vibrator's end cap. A small sticker inside of the battery area directs you which way to insert the battery, while an o-ring seals the battery area, making this toy waterproof.

Being primarily made of silicone, this toy can be kept clean with either an antibacterial soap and water or a toy cleaner. While silicone itself can be boiled to sterilize, tossing this toy in the dishwasher or into a pot of water is not advisable since the heat could damage the plastic or mechanical components. The ridges built into this toy call for a little extra attention during cleaning, but it is otherwise a pretty easy clean-up.

Silicone toys should not be used with silicone-based lubricants.

The Magic Mushroom comes packaged in an elaborately decorated gift box, which is fitted into a cardboard display sleeve. The exterior sleeve features an approximately life-sized photo of the toy on the front, with the name of the toy and "10 Function Silicone Pleasure Product" printed above and below the image. The back of the sleeve breaks down the basic info (waterproof, 10 functions, hold button to turn off), as well as the usual warnings and directions to Doc Johnson's website and social media profiles. The text gives you a good idea of what to expect from this toy at quick glance.

The box that holds the toy is designed to look like a book. Since the "spine" area of the book simply says Wonderland in metallic gold text on a white background, it could actually be stored on a bookshelf without drawing much attention. The front of the box is adorned with an embellished "W", which is decorated with white rabbits, mushrooms, pocket watches and other elements from the Alice in Wonderland story. The top, bottom and side of the box are decorated to look like the book's pages. The back of the box is solid white, except for a discreet Doc Johnson logo at the bottom. In short, the box itself is very discreet, with no words or imagery to hint at a sex toy inside.

Opening the lid of the box (which is held closed by magnets) reveals the toy inside, which is nestled into a soft form-fitting tray. A panel inside the box shows the entire Wonderland collection, which includes 4 designs in addition to the Mystical Mushroom. The box is ideal for storage.

Count me as a fan of this toy! I was impressed by the packaging, which feels more like a box that jewelry would come in than a vibrator. I was pleasantly surprised by the strength of vibrations from the single AA battery. Although most of the patterns of vibration weren't my personal cup of tea, I liked the strong steady setting enough that it made up for it. While this isn't a "main event" toy for me, it will definitely be put to use!
