Traditional vibrator discontinued

Hola, Zola!

Zola by Cal Exotics is a good choice if you're looking for a less powerful, compact, waterproof vibrator. It is silicone so it's completely body safe. However, it only runs on one AA battery so do not expect much in the way of power from this toy. If you are willing to overlook the lack of power Zola can make a great vibrator for those who need a small, discreet vibrator.

Use

Zola is a battery operated vibrator from the Dr. Laura Berman Intimate Basics line of Cal Exotics. It is marketed as both an internal and external vibrator. It is designed for g-spot stimulation but some women will definitely find it too short for that. It works best when used as a clitoral vibrator or a body massager. It is not safe to use this vibrator anally. It’s rather small and does not have a large base or a handle. On the end of Zola is an LED light that forms a ring around the button. The light flashes in sync with any pattern you choose to use Zola on. Zola is completely waterproof so you can enjoy her in your shower or bath. Just make sure the battery compartment is screwed on tight!

Material / Texture

Zola is made of pure silicone. Silicone is completely body safe, as it is non-porous, hypoallergenic, latex free, and phthalate free. It rates as a 10/10 on Eden’s safety scale. It’s an excellent material for sex toys. The silicone on Zola is silky smooth and free from any bumps or rough seams. Because Zola is made of silicone, she has quite a bit of drag when she is rubbed on skin. I’d recommend using a water-based lube with Zola to minimize drag. Please keep in mind that silicone lube can not be used with silicone toys. The silicone material does mean that Zola picks up a fair amount of hair and lint but it’s honestly not as bad as some other silicone toys. Just make sure to wash Zola before and after each use to clean all of the lint off.
The battery cap of Zola is made of ABS plastic with PU Cote and the silver ring above the battery cap is made of ABS plastic with silver plating. Neither of these pieces are really made for insertion.

Design / Shape / Size

Zola is a straight, rigid vibrator. It has an angled, bulged head that is softer than the rest of the vibrator. The head has a small amount of give. When I squeeze it, it has about as much give as a rubber bouncy ball. Oddly enough that’s about all I can think of to compare it to. Below the head is a series of two bulges, each measuring ½” long. They’re not dramatic bulges so those who are texture sensitive should not mind them. In use I could barely feel them. The design reminds me a lot of the Evolved Bliss, although much more compact.

LED Light

Zola is a compact vibrator. She’s not quite as small as a bullet but is definitely smaller than a traditional vibrator. She is 5.25” inches in length, only 4” of that being insertable. The shaft ranges from 3.75” in circumference at the bulges to 3.25” in circumference below the bulges. The head of Zola is about 1” of the total insertable length, depending on where you measure. It is 4” in circumference at it’s widest point.

Size comparison

The small insertable length will definitely be a let down to some women. If you have a shallow g-spot this may work for you internally. It definitely can not reach deep g-spots or offer deep stimulation.

Functions / Performance / Controls

Zola runs on one AA battery. This means it’s not all that powerful. It is controlled by single push button on the battery cap. You push the button once to change settings and hold the button down for three seconds to turn it off. Oddly enough it doesn’t have a vibration memory per se, but when you turn it back on it will start on the setting directly after the one you had it on last. Most vibrators will either return to the first setting or pick up on the last setting used. I found this feature rather annoying. I prefer vibrators that start on the first setting, but to each his own.

Zola has three levels of steady vibration and 7 patterns for a total of 10 settings. The levels of vibrations range from 1.5 vroom, 2 vrooms, and 3 vrooms on the highest. There is very little difference between the low and the medium setting. The 7 patterns all appear to be different pulsations. The box claims that is features escalating patterns as well but I could not find any. All of the vibration settings are on the buzzy side. It’s not the most buzzy toy I own but it’s far from rumbly. The vibrations are also fairly quiet. They can probably be heard in the same room but definitely not through a closed door or a wall. If they’re muffled with a blanket or background noise, there’s very little chance they can even be heard in the same room. The vibrations do travel through the entire toy very well. I did not notice the vibrations being any stronger in any one part of the toy.

Care and Maintenance

Since Zola is waterproof, cleaning is easy. To clean Zola you can use soap and water, your preferred toy cleaner, or a 10% bleach solution. Although silicone is boilable do not boil Zola. Boiling Zola will ruin the electrical components and no one likes a ruined vibrator.

To store Zola, you can keep her in a plastic bag inside of your toy box or storage container. She is compact enough that you can store her in a purse, a pillowcase, a makeup bag, or anywhere else you may want to hide your vibrator. Wherever you choose to store her, be sure to keep her away from other silicone toys. Silicone and silicone do not get along well together. You can also use the original box to store Zola but I find it to be a bit bulky. Keeping her in a plastic bag inside of my toy box works perfectly for me.

Packaging

Zola comes in a purple cardboard box. The front includes a picture of Zola, the name of the line, and a photo of Dr. Laura Berman. One side features a description of Zola while the other side has information on Dr. Laura Berman herself. The back features a short rundown on Zola’s features including that she is waterproof and has 10 settings. The packaging is not discreet. It doesn’t feature any nudity or explicit language but it makes it quite clear this is a vibrator.

Personal comments

Overall, I’m rather indifferent about this vibrator. For a less powerful vibrator I feel it’s a great choice. I love the feel of the silicone on this vibrator and the design. However, because it is only powered by one battery, it’s not exactly a powerhouse. I did have a hard time orgasming with this vibrator but it is possible. It takes more time than some other vibrators I own because it is less powerful. The compact design can definitely be a plus if you’re looking for a compact and hideable vibrator. However, this means sacrificing length during insertion. I think this vibrator definitely has a place in most women’s collection because it’s waterproof, compact, and body safe. It would be perfect for those with roommate situations who need something they can hide and use with discretion. It may not be everyone’s go-to vibrator, but it has it’s uses.
