Boo For Crappy Ingredients

I was really impressed with the Female Pleasure Balm by Icon Brands when I had first tried it. It provided the cooling and tingling sensations and they lasted for awhile. I also really enjoyed the taste and scent of the product. I was irresponsible and didn't research the ingredient list before trying the product. The potential dangers of the ingredients make the balm just not worth it. It's sad because the product works but it is just not safe enough.

The Female Pleasure Balm by Icon Brands is available in the flavours mint or cherry. I received the cherry flavoured balm. The balm comes in a sealed, cylindrical tube. It looks similar to a chap stick, only larger. The packaging isn’t discreet as it has the words “female pleasure balm” in big, bold, capital letters.

The packaging states the product name, company name, flavour, a brief description of the product, company contact information, and ingredients. It also states that 1% of all proceeds are donated to fight sex trafficking, which I thought was really nice. I went to their website to find more information on this but there wasn’t anything available.

The tube stands 3 ¾ inches in height and has a circumference of 3 inches. The balm is 0.5oz. If the tube did not state what the product was, it could easily be mistaken for a large sized chap stick. Actually, the label to the tube is a sticker so you could always peel it off if you want the appearance of the balm to be discreet.

The ingredient list is stated on the tube and what’s nice about this is that the purpose of each ingredient is also listed in brackets beside each one. The ingredients as listed on the tube are as follows: Petrolatum (skin protectant), Beeswax (skin conditioning: emulsifying agent), Cetyl Alcohol (emulsifying agent), Shea Butter (emollient; anti-inflammatory), Isopropyl Myristate (emollient), Menthol (flavouring agent), Sucralose (sweetener), Natural Cherry Flavour (flavouring agent).

After looking at a few articles on each of the ingredients, the two I felt needed to be briefly discussed was the Isopropyl Myristate and the Petrolatum. I found an interesting article that explains potential issues with the first ingredient. The first issue with the ingredient is that it can absorb too deeply in the skin, leaving your pores clogged and in turn, leaving you with dead skin. I assume that this would be more of an issue if you were to apply the balm often, in the same area, and without washing it off afterwards.

The second issue in the article was that it could irritate the skin. Another article I had read mentioned that it could cause acne “flare up”. That being said, I’d recommend using this product on areas of your body that are not acne-prone. Also, you should do a spot-test before applying the product on the more sensitive areas of your body. Apply a small amount to your belly, arm, leg, or wherever and see how your skin reacts to the product. Obviously if your skin turns red, becomes itchy, or has any negative side effects don’t use the product again.

An article on the Petrolatum states that the side effects of petrolatum include finding the petroleum byproduct in breast tumors, suffocation of the skin, premature aging and aggravated acne. I was irresponsible and didn’t read the ingredient list before using the product. I actually researched all of this afterwards. I figured it was worth mentioning that way you don’t make the same mistake I did.

The balm itself is clear in colour. When you apply the balm, it won’t leave any colouring to the body part that it is applied to. You can see in the photo below that the balm has no colour. The balm does not shimmer. It looks like it is in my photo but that’s just the look of the wetness on my skin.

The cherry flavour has a cherry scent and it does taste like cherry. Both my partner and I really enjoy the scent and taste of the product. I didn’t notice any funky aftertaste to the product. The tube to the balm works the same way as a chapstick tube: the very bottom has ridges on it and you turn this area to push the balm up the tube.

The packaging states that the balm gives a tingling and cooling sensation. I noticed both of these sensations but only on certain areas of my body. Products that provide sensations like this tend to vary in strength depending on the individual using it. There have been many times I’ve used warming and/or cooling products where I couldn’t feel a thing, while others said it was extremely intense.
Experience
...continued

The first area I used the balm (after doing a spot-test) was on the lips of my face. I really enjoyed using the balm on this area. Once the balm was applied, it took only about 1 minute before I felt the tingling sensation. The tingling sensation starts off lightly but quickly increases to a medium level of intensity. The tingling sensation lasts for a good 15 minutes and then leaves you with the cool sensation. The cool sensation reminds me of how my skin feels after I’ve applied a vapour rub when I’m sick or in pain. The cool sensation lasts a lot longer than the tingling.

I decided to try it on different areas of my body. I’d recommend using a q-tip or cotton ball to apply the balm to different areas. It keeps it more hygienic. The next area that I had used it was my nipples. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel any tingling or cooling at all in this area. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve been pierced and they’ve become desensitized but there was not even a slight cooling or tingling feeling.

The last place I tried it was on the clitoris. I didn’t feel any tingling sensations but I definitely felt the cooling sensation in this area. The cooling sensation was strongest for the first 20 minutes or so and continued to provide a slight cool feeling for another 25-30 minutes. I was impressed with how long the sensation lasted!

The balm does not feel sticky or oily. It absorbs into the skin nicely. The problem with this is that if you don’t like the sensation it provides, you may still be left with a bit of the sensation after wiping it off with soap and water since a bit has already absorbed into the skin. Surprisingly, I did not experience any skin irritation when I used the balm.

I’ve decided to give the balm a 3 out of 5 because while it does what it’s supposed to, the potential dangers of the ingredients makes it just not worth it. I’m really disappointed because I really enjoyed the balm before I realized how unsafe the ingredients are. I probably would have used the balm daily just to feel the sensations if the ingredients were safer.

Below is a size comparison photo. The balm is on the far left of the photo. The item in the middle is a regular sized lipstick (.15oz) and the item on the far right is a double A battery.
