Hot Chocolate? Not Quite.

Though the Chocolates vibe is not one of my favorites anymore, it was a good beginners toy. The low price makes up for some of the cons, and for those just starting out and wanting a nice, simple clitoral vibrator, this toy might be just what they crave.

Use

The Doc Johnson Chocolates slimline vibe was the first I ever owned. It's small, unassuming, simple, and an incredibly good choice for a first time toy. The Chocolates vibe is best used, in my opinion, for clitoral use. It's okay for use on the nipples, neck, and other erogenous zones, but as far as penetration goes, it's a little too slim to be of any great use, especially for those who are more experienced. As a beginning penetrating toy it might be okay, but it definitively is too slim to really provide a great amount of stimulation. I would not recommend using this toy anally, as it has no flared safety base. This product could be used solo or in a couple situation. It's small enough that it could be held between partners during intercourse, however, it is a little too slim at certain times, and after a while, your hand can start to cramp while holding it. It's not the quietest vibe ever, but it is quiet enough to be almost undetectable when slipped under the covers or muffled in the shower, so it would be ideal for a dorm or shared housing situation. It's small enough to be hidden easily, and travels well. I slip mine into a makeup bag and no one is the wiser.

Material / Texture

The texture of the Chocolates vibe is extremely smooth. It's a classic slimline vibe made of hard, smooth plastic, so it doesn't have much going on texture wise. Plastic is a level 8 safety material, and it's non-porous and phthalate-free. I would recommend this vibe for beginners, simply because of how small, slim, and non-intimidating it is. Because of how smooth it is, it doesn't really provide a lot of vaginal stimulation. Instead, I'd use this on the clitoris, or maybe on the nipples during foreplay. It had no odor or taste at all. The one thing about it that I didn't like was how easily the paint chipped off. I'm not sure if I washed it too enthusiastically, or if it was an actual problem, but after a few uses, little flecks of the rainbow colored paint would chip off.

Design / Shape / Size

The shape, size, and design of the Chocolates vibe is that of a traditional slimline vibrator. Small, thin, with a long shaft and narrow, rounded tip. For me, this definitely struck me as a beginner's toy. Sure, the length could be intimidating, but considering I didn't use it internally, it wasn't an issue for me. It was simple, easy to hide, and fairly discreet. Of course, the traditional design makes it unmistakable, and if you leave it out, most people will be able to tell that it's a vibrator. One thing that really detracts from it is how hard it is to keep a hold on it, especially when things get slippery. It's so small and smooth that you really have to keep a firm grip on it, and that can quickly tire out your hands. I found myself having to switch hands often when I took it for a longer session. At 6 3/4 inches long (6 inches insertable), with a 3 1/2 inch circumference, the Chocolates vibe isn't the tinest around, but it also isn't the largest. However, despite the size, due to the classic (nearly iconic) shape, it's pretty unmistakable as a sex toy. It is, however, very easy to hide, and slips neatly into the bottom of bags and suitcases for easy travel.

Functions / Performance / Controls

The Chocolates vibe is controlled by a simple twist knob at the base of the toy. I like the twist knobs because, instead of preset power levels, you can really customize what level of vibration you want. The twist knob is easy to control, and is textured nicely so that you can get a decent grip on it even if your hands are slippery. The twist knob isn't easy to bump and change during use. However, when it comes to the vibrations, it seems like most of them in the Chocolates vibe are centered in the middle of the toy, not in the tip. This makes it a little more difficult to use the rounded tip for pinpoint vibrations. (However, if you like to grind against firm toys instead of use pinpoint stimulation, this can make for a much more satisfying vibe.) The vibrations themselves range from very light and tickly to deeper rumbly sensations, but never quite reach the deep vibrations that some more advanced users might desire. The sound of the vibrations depends on the level, and can pretty easily be masked by covers and a closed door at the lower levels. However, the noises become almost rattly (especially the older the toy is) on the highest setting, but still can't be heard through covers and doors. The Chocolates vibe is waterproof, and while I'm one who never likes to submerge toys, no matter what the waterproof warning says, it's great for use in the shower. The batteries seem to last a good long while in this toy, and and the vibration level is pretty strong for a slimline vibrator. Not as strong as some toys I've used, but definitely not the weakest either. The Chocolates vibe takes two AA batteries, and is good about staying cool even after extended use.

Care and Maintenance

This toy is extremely easy to care for. Since it's waterproof, you can submerge it in the sink and wash it completely, or use toy cleaner and wipes (I tend to rely on plain old soap and water). Since it's so small and slim, it's easy to store, and the material is compatible with both water and silicone based lubricants. I wouldn't, however, store it in close contact with other toys, simply because of the paint chipping issue.

Packaging

The Chocolates vibe comes in a clear plastic box. The vibe is completely visible, so it's not discreet at all. However, it's not covered in pornographic pictures or language(a plus for some), so that does make it a little more friendly looking. The box is fun and modern, with colored text and phrases like "makes her melt every time!" All in all, a fun little package. You could store the toy in the original box if you wanted to, however, I prefer not to.

Personal comments

I'm the type that prefers more intense, focused stimulation, so this vibe wasn't the best for me. I had to put a lot of pressure on my clitoral area with it in order to achieve orgasm (this might be from me finding vaginal stimulation more pleasing, I'm sure people with sensitive clitorises will be more than pleased).
Follow-up commentary
This vibrator was a great "training wheels" toy. As it was the first toy I ever bought, I think the Chocolates Vibrator will always have a special place in my heart. But admittedly, I haven't gotten cozy with it in months. While it was a great first toy, it's just not intense enough to please me anymore. But if you're a beginner looking for a non-intimidating, fun toy to start with, definitely un-wrap this chocolate-y delight. But if you're more advanced, skip dessert this time around.
