Magnum Opis

The Opis vibrator offers a lot of versatility for girth-lovers with its variety of settings, steady and patterned. The vibrations, focused at the tip, are powerful, but also loud at the high settings. Made of medical grade silicone in vibrant pink or purple, with seductive ripples and swells it’s a lovely toy made from the best materials available.

Use

Shots Media’s Opis vibrator is a traditional vibrator with multiple speeds/settings and moderate texture. The motor is strongest at the tip, which makes this an excellent clitoral stimulator. It can also be used on nipples, the perineum, and other erogenous areas. This toy is also great for thrusting. It should be used vaginally only, since it has no flared base for safe anal play. The girth of this toy makes it suitable for intermediate-advanced users. Beginners may have a hard time with this toy. This toy has a plush, rippled texture on one side, and is smooth on the other. It’s noticeable during use, but since the toy is made of plush silicone, it won’t be overwhelming to those who are texture sensitive. The Opis is excellent for solo play. Because of its size and rigidity, it may be tricky for partner play.

Material / Texture

Opis is made from medical grade silicone, which has a 10 safety rating and is latex-free, phthalates-free, and non-porous. The Opis can be sanitized by bleaching. Do not boil this toy or put it in the dishwasher, since it’s not safe for the motor. It’s splash-proof, meaning that it can be used in the shower but not submerged in water. Opis has that slight sweet smell and taste typical of silicone toys, but it’s not strong or unpleasant. It comes in pink or purple. I chose the pink, and it appears to be exactly the same shade as I saw on the product page.

The Opis actually has a silicone cover over a plastic core that is completely rigid. While the silicone itself is plush and comfortable to use, this toy does not bend. If you unscrew the base from the battery compartment, you will see that you can actually lift the silicone layer off the plastic core. It’s not going to fall off during use, but I think it could be removed if you tried. I don't want to peel it off completely, in case that would destroy the toy. The silicone layer is about 1/4 inch thick, and it has a gentle amount of give. The silicone feels like it's very high-quality, velvety with just a bit of drag.

The texture on the outside of the Opis is very mild; sloping ridges that wrap around one side of the toy from just below the tip to two inches above the plastic base. While the texture is certainly noticeable during use, due to the plushness of the silicone it should be comfortable even for those who are texture-sensitive. The ridges come up less than 1/8 inch from the body of the toy and they're about 1/2 inch apart. Shorter ridges run parallel to each other and slightly diagonal, framed by longer ridges. The texture is only on side. I found this a little frustrating during use. The side with texture would feel much more stimulating than the side with no texture. There is a visible seam on either side of the toy, but it wasn’t noticeable during use. There is also a raised crown symbol right above the plastic base. I’ve never inserted the toy far enough to find out if it’s noticeable.

Design / Shape / Size

Opis measures 8 inches, with an insertable length of 6.5 inches. The hard plastic base, which unscrews to reveal the battery compartment, is the part excluded from the insertable length. The shaft of this toy is 1.5 inches in diameter at its widest point, making this a girthy toy for insertion. 1.5 inches is at the larger end of what I prefer for my dildos; this toy feels more filling than other toys with a similar diameter.

The shaft seems to have three swells from tip to base, with a diameter of about 1.2 inches between each swell. The swells are evenly spaced throughout the shaft. The curves between the swells and narrow points are gentle, but they do provide a little extra stimulation when thrusting with this toy that feels nice. They're not very noticeable unless you thrust slowly, since they are very slight swells. The tip of this toy is medium, neither broad nor pinpoint. It’s able to provide good clitoral stimulation, but it’s a little too broad for easy insertion. Even with plenty of lubrication, it's just tricky for me to find an angle for easily inserting this toy. However, I do tend to prefer toys with a slightly smaller girth. I would recommend this as a toy for intermediate-advanced users, or beginners who enjoy a toy with large girth.

The ripples are beautiful to look at, but Opis is phallic in shape, and not discreet at all. It’s perfectly fine for traveling, but I would recommend taking the battery out first so that it doesn’t turn on while it’s in your luggage. I would also recommend storing it out of sight if you don’t want it to be recognized as a sex toy.

Functions / Performance / Controls

Opis is powered by two AA batteries (included). The hard plastic base unscrews to reveal the battery compartment. It is controlled by a push button at the bottom which is made of either silicone or a plastic resembling silicone. The button is easy to press, but it’s also easy to accidentally press it while thrusting. The motor for this toy is in the tip. The vibrations are strongest at the tip, and get weaker farther down the shaft. They seem to decrease with each swell. The first swell houses the motor, and it's very strong. The second swell is about 80% as strong. The third swell is maybe 50% as strong as the first swell. At the very bottom, I can still feel the vibrations when I hold this toy in my hand, but they're not very penetrating. On the plus side, that means that this toy won't ever numb your hand.

The controls are simple. Pressing the button once turns the toy on and starts the first setting. Pressing the button again changes it to the next setting. Holding the button turns the toy off. Once turned off, it will start again at the first setting when turned on again. The first three settings are low, medium, and high steady vibrations. The low and medium settings are about two and three vrooms, respectively, very rumbly, and very quiet. The high setting is much buzzier and louder, about four vrooms and four bees. The only toy I own that is louder than the Opis on high is the [Fairy massager], which is as loud as a vacuum cleaner.

The next seven settings are patterned settings. All of the patterned settings seem to include the high setting, so they’re all very loud. Once the toy has cycled through all the settings, it returns to the first setting. All of the patterns are described in the back of the instruction booklet included. The toy includes escalating and pulsing patterns.

In order:
Low steady vibrations
Medium steady vibrations
High steady vibrations
Long pulse
Medium pulse
Three short pulses, low to high
Long pulse pattern
2 long and 2 short pulse pattern
2 long and 4 short pulse pattern
Low-high, low-high, 2 short pulses

I wash this toy in the sink with soap and water. If you're careful, this toy can be washed with water. But there is no O-ring, and there's a gap between the battery compartment and the rest of the toy that leads me to doubt the "splashproof" claim on the box. I like this toy too much to risk testing out its waterproof capabilities.

    • Lots of variety in function
    • Loud
    • Strong patterns

Care and Maintenance

Since the Opis is made of silicone, it’s very easy to clean and maintain. Compared to a lot of silicone toys I own, it’s not really a lint magnet so it doesn’t require cleaning before use if it’s cleaned thoroughly after using it. For regular cleaning between uses, soap and water is best, as long as you're very careful of the battery compartment, which doesn't seem to be watertight. It can be sanitized with bleach for sharing between partners without a condom, but since it has a motor, do not boil it or put it in the dishwasher. Silicone is compatible with water-based lubes only. Using silicone-based lubes or storing this toy in contact with other silicone toys will destroy it. This toy can be stored or displayed in its original packaging, or in a drawer/toychest/nightstand/anywhere you choose. It doesn’t come with a pouch, but buying one for it would be a good idea if it’s going to be stored in close proximity with other silicone toys.
    • Easy to clean
    • Easy to store

Packaging

The packaging for this toy is lovely. The box is black with silver lettering and a subtle argyle pattern. On one side, it displays the toy inside a clear plastic clamshell. The other side opens and closes with a magnet to reveal the toy as well. It has information about the toy in several languages. Inside, the toy is couched in a plastic clamshell, along with two AA batteries. The package contains two small booklets: one contains warranty information (it has a one-year warranty covering silicone tears and motor problems), and the other contains product information and instructions. Information about the toy’s 10 settings is towards the back of the booklet, while English instructions for the toy are right up towards the front. The packaging is very attractive and perfect for gifting, but it’s not discreet, so you may want to wrap if gifting. The packaging would also work for storing or displaying the Opis, but it’s a little bulky. I prefer to recycle it and use a pouch to store my Opis.

    • Not discreet
    • Very informative
    • Would make a nice gift

Personal comments

The Opis is a great toy for those who want a traditional vibrator with a large girth and a variety of settings. If it weren’t for the girth, I would say that this is the perfect beginner’s toy, since it has a wide range of settings, moderate texture, simple controls, and a traditional shape. For a beginner who likes girth, this would be a perfect first vibrator, since this toy has the versatility for them to discover what works for them. With its power and interesting design, advanced users can also enjoy the Opis.

Experience

I chose the Opis as the first vibrator I’ve owned with different patterns of vibration, rather than just steady speeds. I was seduced by the image of its ripples and swells. It’s a very lovely vibrator, and it’s also on the larger end of toys I can use comfortably. The Opis carried a few disappointments for me though. The two bees rating it has on the product page clearly only describes the first two settings; the rest of the settings are four bees, though they are quiet enough to be muffled by covers and a closed door. The vibrations don’t travel well down the shaft, making this better as a clitoral stimulator than a thrusting toy. The patterns were the reason I bought this toy, and I found that patterns just don’t do it for me. While they’re fun for foreplay, I don’t think I will ever orgasm from one of the patterned settings. I just switch to the high setting when I’m ready to orgasm. The other disappointment was that the texture was only on one side. I think this toy would be better if the texture wrapped around the whole toy. While I still enjoy this toy, it could be better, especially considering its $60 price tag.
