Why I Hate “It Gets Better”

In September 2010, pundit Dan Savage started the “It Gets Better” project — a series of videos aimed at informing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teenagers that despite the bullying and abuse they were victims of in school, “it gets better” as they grow up.

I think you make some very valid points in shining a light on the hypocrisy of it being okay to bully one group or discriminate against LGBTs on a legal level. While I think that more anti-bullying policies, training and such need to be going on in each and every school, I do think that telling kids that it gets better serves a purpose. Growing up sucked for many people, in one way or another, and people got bullied for some pretty dumb things (like having red hair or freckles or a lisp). We should work simultaneously to teach kids not to bully while also telling that the jerk who picked on you in middle school isn't going to matter in 10 years.

I also think it's important to point out to people when they're being jerks, like Dan Savage making transphobic remarks or picking on fat girls or Obama not supporting marriage equality, because even those of us who would like to think of ourselves as setting a good example still have a lot to learn.
