Would you be completely thrown back or take offense if they said they were in the adult industry?

I was taken aback the first time it happened mainly because I didn't have a good response to that. I mean normally when someone says they're a rocket scientist or something you say, "Oh, you must be really smart!" or if they're a baker you say something like, "I love cake!" but it's hard to come up with a good, polite response to someone working in an adult industry.

Now I know a few people that have worked in various adult industries and I'm a bit more relaxed when it's brought up but it's still hard to find something to say other then, "Oh, all right."

If I met them in the quiet, small town where I live, I would be extremely surprised, but I would probably say, "Awesome!"

I'd probably say something that "That is awesome! I love porn. Want to see my dildo collection?"

I'd probably be a little shocked or surprised, but I wouldn't take any offense. I love the adult industry, from the toys to the books to the videos, and being offended that someone I know is employed in something I love would just be completely silly.

Odds are, once I was over the initial surprise, I'd probably get all fangirl-chatty and drive the person up the wall with questions.

Why would I take offense to that? I'd probably say the same thing I say anytime anyone tells me what they do -- "oh, that's cool."

I think it would be hypocritical of me if I did; there are many dozen of layers within the industry and it takes all kinds of people to make it work - not just those who like to be paid to fuck.

I'd be intrigued, because it's an ... interesting subset of the film industry, but I wouldn't be offended. Maybe a little surprised, but not completely taken aback.

Exactly!!! And each and every one of us who has written a review for a sex toy or piece of lingerie is doing work in the adult industry. This is NOT a G rated site for the kids, the toys are for adult sexual pleasure.

So...fellow members of the adult industry, why would WE be shocked? We are working in it as well--otherwise we would not be so concerned about maintaining our privacy and hiding our real identities. We would also talk about this to everyone from fellow church members to your child's teacher. We would add this to our facebook accounts and resume's when job hunting.

I would maybe be a little surprised (I've never known anyone who was - at least publicly!), but I would be so interested and want to know about their job!

I've known a few sex workers so I don't think I would be surprised. I might be a little surprised if it was someone who seemed more conservative but I'd be even more excited about that.

I have met several individuals working in the industry, to me it wasn't any big deal but to some of my Coworkers in the ER it was a big deal. One of the individuals was really in your face about it like we were supposed to be in awe. I believe that she liked the shock value of it.

I've actually thought of saying I'm a reviewer for an adult website to see what kind of reaction I'd get.

Lmao, I can see it now...

you - " Oh I work as a review for an adult website "
them - " wow, How does that work"
you - " Oh you know, they send me free toys, some real crazy looking stuff, and then I do dirty, nasty things to myself with them, see how far I gan push the product, and then review back telling everyone every little detail about my trial."

them - ' jaw dropped, eyes wide...... "ummm, neat!?

I am going to have to try that one!
'
