Try this rubber whip link. You can pretty much hit someone as hard as you want with this baby and not hurt them. They're like BDSM training wheels.

Educating yourself about what you like is a great idea, that way you can explain things to your partner in a way that is knowledgeable and it can help take away the taboo. Also, open, honest communication with your BF is extremely important. Sitting down with him and explaining what it is that you want and what turns you on will only open doors. That should certainly be easier to take than coming at him with whips and chains

I would say:
1. Education.
2. Communication.
3. Exploration.

Remember that even porn films are still films; shot, re-shot, edited, movie magic. Just like movies the way things play out on screen are often now how they play out in real life. Not to say that you can't or shouldn't take ideas from them but remember that things may not go quite as "perfectly" as they did in the film. Just like trying any new sexual activity don't be surprised if there are some awkward or humorous moments, they often make for a good laugh later though.
