I've also seen hard-to-make hand signals being 'safe words.'

Yea, as the others have said, you can do hand signals, such as thumbs up for more, or thumbs down for slow down, or tapping out if it becomes too much.

We use hand signals.

Hand signals can work. A series of grunts in a certain pattern are often used. Sometimes the top give the bottom an object to hold and dropping it counts as "red".

Hand signals, if your hands are free, complex nods also work, breathable gags, or bits you can mumble through are also an option.

I use the tap out method. Two firm taps means stop and check in with me.

I hold a bell, if I want the gag off then I ring the bell

a tap out, thumbs up or thumbs down, a bell, or holding something like a setr of keys and dropping if its too much, also allowing your body to go limp is often a sign to stop.

This one hasn't been mentioned but it's fairly common (at least in the BDSM porn industry): make any noise three times in a row (a muffled "mhh mhh mhh" will work). Obviously that has to be specified a little more so that muffled moans don't come across as a safeword (and even more importantly, so that an attempted use of a safeword isn't misinterpreted as mere moaning), but it's easy enough to specify (although a little hard to describe in text).

Hand signals, hold a ball in your hand that you drop if you need to stop, tapping.

If I'm up close to the person, I use two firm taps on their body (think tapping out in martial arts). If they're not close to touch, I hold onto something that's going to be loud if I drop it.

I tap the headboard. One tap, he stops

I would say a tap signal would be the best way!

We have a hand signal and when he is up close and can't easily see my hands, two firm taps on his arm works. Once we used blinks of the eyes for a specific scene where i was bound and gagged and couldn't give a hand signal
