I was reading around the forums today and had to make note of something. There is a Top wandering around somewhere here on Eden who says S/He (I don't remember their gender, sorry) only carries metal cuffs to get a rise out of their bottom... They don't recommend using them. Could someone please tell me why? My boyfriend and I have metal cuffs and shackles we've been dying to try as soon as we have a frame on our bed, but if it's unsafe I'd rather find something else... Help!!!
Wait, Why Not Metal?

Just be careful with them. I don't see any reason not to use them.

Metal cuffs are just more painful. Leather restraints are more comfortable and won't cut or put pressure on the joints. Metal cuffs, when you pull against them can leave welts (even if they have a cloth covering on them). If you dig pain, metal cuffs are great, but just be aware that they can cause damage, and make sure that they're not on too tight.

I like the immediate sensation of them, but for long-term use they are pretty painful. I've gotten some pretty nasty bruising from metal cuffs.
Neoprene is my go-to material because it's so comfortable and really sturdy.

Other. I don't like metal cuffs, and they can be painful and even damaging if you pinch a nerve or cut off circulation.
And why not get an under-the-bed-restrain t system? Or just some rope that goes under your bed?

I have used metal cuffs, I would use them in the future if an appropriate situation arose, but there are downfalls to everything. Metal cuffs are much easier to be hurt with, if they are unlined. Metal cuffs can bruise or even cut the wearer if they are struggling, like one often does in handcuffs.
For this reason I prefer other materials, but there are some things that just cannot be substituted around and a good pair of metal cuffs is sometimes necessary. Caution is key with anything in BDSM.

So what I'm hearing is, use the metal ones on him but get some cloth or leather cuffs for me. He loves pain and can take quite a lot, and I know how to be careful; I love pain too but can't take nearly as much as I like.
Thanks for all your help, everyone!

I don't use them but there's nothing inherently wrong or dangerous about metal cuffs as long as you don't use them too tightly. Communicate with your partner when using them and there shouldn't be any problems.

Metal just hurts my boney wrists more. I like padding. Especially cause I wriggle about alot.
02/27/2011
Looks wise I like the metal - I guess maybe cause they are like the police ones so more realistic.
BUT, they are rough on the wrists - especially if you want to do some struggling in your play.
Besides that, if I really want to get out of the metal ones - I can ... and without using either locking systems.

Oh, the other thing I prefer about leather restraints is that they are way more compatible with more accessories. You can use them with under the bed restraint systems, hog ties, spreader bars, et cetera. Also, it's easier to change positions with leather (or non-metal) restraints because you can just unhook them, with metal cuffs, you have to grab the key. I just find that restraints are far more versatile on top of being more comfortable.

I tend to play for extended lengths of time and that play can be pretty hard. The metal can bruise and bite against the wrists and sometimes hinder the headspace of the bottom or submissive. I'd prefer to struggle in my leather cuffs and keep my head focused on what my Top or Dom is doing.

I agree with what's been posted already. You can use metal, you just have to be careful and not put them on too tight, or so high that the cuffed person will be pulling on them constantly and thus injuring their wrists. (Unless they want to injure their wrists! ) They can still be plenty of fun though!

i have them and have used them from time to time, I dont like them as much as my leather cuffs cause they pinch and what not... I usually end up with bruises on my wrists from them.

I like to play with them, but I have had a bad experience breaking a pair of metal handcuffs. They weren't novelty ones, they were kind of heavy-duty. My wrists were torn to shreds. It was scary. I was 18 and had no clue what I was doing. I know those aren't technically the metal cuffs you speak of, but even so--kind of horrifying for both parties.

Metal cuffs are great for some applications, but I would be exceptionally cautious, especially now. My current partner doesn't like "dungeon-y" stuff. Yet.

possibly comfort. if they are on too long in uncomfortable position can be a turn off.
04/30/2011
I would assume the factor of no padding and harder, sharper material could cause discomfort and even injury if not careful. That's my only guess for her/his reasoning.

Metal ouches. leather is usually very comfy even if you struggle in it.
05/08/2011
They can just do more damage is all.
01/14/2012
I greatly prefer leather restraints.
01/14/2012
We like metal, but prefer leather cuffs.

It's pretty much been covered, but metal cuffs can be painful, especially if you pull against them at all. They can also be kind of noisy if they are rattling against something.
01/14/2012
The metal feels nice but they're best for lighter bondage in my opinion, I've bruised my wrists pretty bad on several occasions using them. I suppose as long as you don't intend on doing much struggling and they're not pulling your wrists/ankles taught they'd be alright though.
01/14/2012
Be careful when using them because they can become painful if you are stuggling against them.
01/15/2012
i don't have metal cuffs (i have aslan's jaguar leather cuffs), but with any product, i think you should consider the pros and cons before purchasing and using them. in my opinion, metal cuffs would not be suitable for moderate to heavy bondage because i am sure you would bruise very easily with them. but for light play, i don't see a problem. experiment and find what is right for you and your boyfriend.

Metal cuffs hurt, and I'm not into pain. I use leather.
01/18/2012
Sure, metal looks cool. I would try it.

Yep. I like my Sportscuffs because they are comfortable. Plus, they are really adjustable, and don't leave marks.

metal cuffs can really hurt your sub if you're not careful. it is best to think about what you're doing and if flexible leather or hard steel cuffs are what you really want. some people just enjoy the feel of metal cuffs that i find unpleasant or discomforting.
03/20/2012
Metal hurts. I have boney wrists and it would just be really uncomfortable and I could quite possibly be cut by those cuffs if I'm wriggling around a lot.
I'm a masochist, but not where I'm dealing with 'bad' pain.
