BDSM =

Bondage & Disciple (BD)
Dominance & Submission (DS)
Sadism & Masochism (SM)

It's three terms in one. Anything under those terms is considered BDSM.

My definition of BDSM is: sexual activities outside the social 'norm'.

Kira pretty much nailed it on the head, the only thing I would add is that it is safe, sane, and consensual.

Some may call it cliche but when you cross that border it becomes a fine line between BDSM and abuse.

This.
I also agree with what Gingertrap said. If it's not safe, sane, and consensual, it's not BDSM.
