Toys may be a nice option too if he does not mind but they will not give you the 'feel' of whats happening or the intimacy.

Try to lead with the pad of your finger rather than your nail.
In the end, go slowly and talk talk talk. Don't rush it at all. If it hurts, then go for a silicone toy instead.

Yea as a happy receiver I have to say no to nails especially long or acrylic if you want the intimacy use the cotton ball in the end of the finger of gloves if it doesn't bother you however I would say a good small toy is a good investment especially if you are thinking of toy play later since he will already be accustom to it I would suggest running the toy under warm water before you lube up and go because it will reduce the shock factor upon entry and the warmth is nice and relaxing
