Honestly just from seeing previews of this movie, I thought it was closer to porn. Your thoughts make me want to sit down and really watch it. Sounds very interesting.
There is VERY.LITTLE. Nudity (if any????) in the movie at all. It's more about their relationship than their sex life. But it is pretty hot.

I'm much more of a lurker in general. I always read whole meetings, although I don't always have much to add to them.

I would imagine it would depend on how serious the cutting is. It's usually symptomatic of a bigger Dx. What I do think this brings up is the ways people use kink to battle their demons or work through/perpetuate their issues.

I think she almost died? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I really liked it but it's quite different from the movie. Not as overtly kinky but I still found it perversely erotic.

Can you expand on that a little bit? I want to make sure I understand what you mean

To be completely honest, I didn't feel like the cutting was too graphic. It's more the knowledge that it's happening more so than the actual cutting. They do, actually, institutionalize for cutting, same as with ED... for the same reasons.

She cut too deep...they show the memory scene of her doing dishes and admitting how long she'd been cutting. At that point I would assume she almost died or that the medical field saw it as a direct suicide attempt and she was institutionalized for that.

I kind of ambivalent about people forming an impression of what kink is like based solely on this movie though.

I can get the whole cutting for masochistic pleasure thing, I've been there.

I'm not sure how I feel about the abusive father, though, it strikes me as a reaffirmation of the negative stereotypes the kinky often face.

They can if they believe you're a danger to yourself and/or others.

It shows where her parents were arguing and her mom turns her back. Lee knows she only has a second and ends up cutting too deep in her hast. So basically she's there because of a "suicide attempt".

I think so. There's a line about "A slip of the hand" and "cutting deeper than I intended." along those lines

oh of course. It only touches into the whole field of kink. Just like that I could understand the dynamic and subject and appreciate it so much more.

I have to agree with you on that...if people are not involved and not at all familiar with this lifestyle, the movie can give the impression that every sub is Lee and every dominant/domme is Mr. Grey and that every relationship includes their activities and their rules and repercussions. But for those that understand that all dynamics are different and all involve different aspects of the lifestyle, it's an interesting little window to peek through just to see the progression.

People engage in kink for countless reasons (and I am speaking as a lifelong kinkster). Sometimes people will use kink to work through trauma, cope with depression or anxiety, etc. and it can be done in healthy AND unhealthy ways...For example when I was 26 I desperately wanted to be collared because I felt so aimless and unhappy, and wanted a Dom to run my life for me. 5 years later I'm really glad it didn't happen because that's a not a great place to start a D/s relationship from in my opinion, and I think it might have inhibited my personal growth. But of course, everyone has their own personal reasons for participating in kinky relationships.

Okay, does it say something about me that I seen ED and thought "Erectile Disfunction" ... Eating disorders make so much more sense.

Right! Most cutters are NOT suicidal at all. They see it as a release valve so to speak. But in this case because it was a "slip" they institutionalized her "for her safety"

Many have no intention of killing themselves - instead they either enjoy the rush of the pain or they do it to feel something because the pain of their lives has taken over everything else. There are some that fall into both categories of course though.
