Here's a tip for you folks who are looking to join a gym! (Or have a gym membership you're paying for and never use!)

Cardio is great for burning big calories, but your muscles recover from cardio quickly and you will stop burning calories until your next run on the elliptical or ride on the bike. Pair your cardio workouts with strength training! When you work out your muscle groups in isolated, specific sessions with weight resistance, you burn calories 9 times longer than with cardio alone (according to the personal training coordinator at my gym). This is because your muscles break down during training and take 24-72 hours to recover.

Even if you don't go to a gym, you can do this at home rather inexpensively by using free weights and resistance bands. Spark People has a section where you can see different exercises and get demos, but there are a lot of other websites around that can offer you the same. Such as About.com, Wellnessletter.com, or Strongshape.com

When you decide to start a workout regimen, do much less that you are capable of the first few days. That way, you won't overexert your muscles and strain them. Nothing will make you stop your exercise regimen faster than having your entire body hurt for 3-4 days after your first workout session. After those first few days, you can start working up to what you are capable of doing, and then eventually pushing yourself to do more.

Personally, I can't manage to commit to an exercise regimen, but I do work in exercise whenever I can. I walk in place with high knee lifts when I brush my teeth, take a shower, or make dinner, I lift 5-lb weights when I'm typing on the computer, I run up the stairs with high knee lifts when I come upstairs, etc. I figure all this accounts for at least 30 or so minutes of exercise a day when I would otherwise not be burning any calories.

I find it much easier to work out with someone else, rather than alone. When I find that I am just not feeling like going and working out, grabbing my boyfriend and my spare weight helps me to get into it. I think this may make a lot of people work harder, too, since it's a chance to show off how well you can do weight lifting reps or how fast you can run.

Make sure you pick an exercise that you LIKE. If you hate running don't try and get yourself to run 5 miles every morning because you will most likely give up on it after a few days. Expirement with different types of excercise until you find something you like.

For example I know that I do best with group aerobics classes and since I actually enjoy going, I'm less likely to skip out on it than if I was planning on going rowing or something.

Seconding the exercises you like.

I love dancing of all types. I have Zumba for the Wii, several DVDs of choreographed dancing, belly dancing, Just Dance Wii, and I use that for cardio a couple of times a week. For weight training/resistance and cardio, I love doing the Jillian Michaels DVDs. I've got most of them and they really work for me. It helps, immensely, to encourage exercise if you find something you enjoy doing. It can really be anything from gardening, to water aerobics, walking the dog, going to the gym or whatever it takes to get you moving.

Also, don't give up! If you haven't exercised in months (or years), don't expect to be able to do everything perfectly. It doesn't matter if you can do 50 push-ups. If you can do 1, you can work your way up. Just be sure to maintain proper form and focus on the muscles you're working so that you feel it. Don't push yourself too hard, but don't sell yourself short either.

I drink lots of water, I have a warterbottle on me at all times.

I drink water 10 minutes before every meal, it's really good at keeping me regular. It's good for your digestive sytem.

I don't replace my meals by water, I just add a glass of water before my meal and plan a regular meal. If I don't finish my plate, I have left overs.

I started drinking more water after I read this post online link.

I second the 30 Day Shred DVDs! They are awesome, go quick and if you do them consistently, get easier and you will see definite results. They are available on Amazon VOD, so you don't even need to buy the DVDs.

Netflix also has a lot of great workout DVDs on Instant. The Crunch yoga videos will give you a great workout.

LOL! Very cute!

Anyway, as for DVDs, my favorites have been the Jillian Michaels (which I got for free off my cable on demand once), and Turbo Jam by BeachBody. It's really intense and not very easy. If you do it right, you have to keep your core engaged.

I still have it and I use it when I want to work out but don't/can't go to the gym.

My new motto is: NO MORE EXCUSES!!

I agree with finding an activity you enjoy. I love Zumba, and I miss it terribly when I don't go. I also try to work in extra steps/exercise moves during the day. Sometimes I'll make multiple trips up the stairs to put away the laundry even though I could have carried it all at once. For me, exercise is a great stress reliever. No matter how tired or not in the mood I think I am, I always feel better afterwards. Hopefully the weather will warm up and get more springlike so I can start going on my long walks again.

Booby Bump

And by the way... new tip:

Give yourself at least one day to let the muscles in a specific muscle group to recover before working them out again.

I love to take the fitness classes at my gym. It can be intimidating to walk in to a big group of fit people who seem to know what they are doing but they work. The instructors are motivating and should give you options if you have bad knees or can't perform an activity. You make great friendships with other people who are in the same boat as you. Peer pressure is good here! Not only do your fitness friends ask where you've been if you've skipped a week but if you are working out and start to get tired, it pushes you to keep going because they are too.

I used to teach step aerobics and kickboxing and I always told my new people to give it 3 tries. The first two are usually confusing and you feel uncoordinated, but by the third class you're getting it and it starts to get fun.

Also, when you are sitting throughout the day, tense you butt muscles or abs or anything else for a quick muscle burn!

My wallpaper has that in giant block text!

Girls tend to prefer different types of workouts than guys, in my experience, but I've done a lot of it, so I'll contribute what I can.

1. If you're worried about aesthetics, focus on strength training.

2. If you want strength, do 5 sets of 5 reps of each exercise. You should be failing on the final rep of the final set. If you're worried about looks, go for 5 sets of 12.

3. DON'T FORGET TO WORK OUT YOUR LEGS.

4. Full body workouts 3 days a week are enough to get good results. (Chest, Shoulders, Back, Legs, and abs)

5. Isolation exercises (curls, machines) aren't as good as compound exercises (presses, squats)

6. Free weights work better than machines.

7. Jogging is hard on your knees, ankles, and yes, your boobs. Unless you just really love running, there are better workouts out there that won't do as much damage to your body.

I always find this a good motivator before a workout. My girlfriend says "it's mean", but hey, everybody needs a kick in the ass sometimes.

I agree! I've been finding that I really enjoy dance classes and yoga classes. I want to show up at these, especially when I find instructors that I like.

I did Sparkpeople for a few months. I found it to be a great motivator at first but quickly got bored. And now with my current living situation, I'm only able to get to the gym 2-3 days a week at most. Total bummer for someone who used to go 6 days a week.

But I need the gym. Can't do it at home. I do a combo of step classes (love step, have even taught it myself) and weight training.

I've been using Jillian Michaels Body Revolution, and I'm going to pick up the 30 day spread. I wish there were more good female lead combination workouts.
