I heard you have more of a chance of getting a UTI after sex if you don't pee. Is that true?

I hear it's healthy for women at least, but I've never made it much of a concern of mine and rarely have I gotten a UTI from NOT peeing afterwards. I suppose it depends a lot on mutual hygiene.

I don't think UTI's typically are exacerbated by either urinating or not urinating...

I have heard through many sources (some medical and around the forums here) that it is good to pee after sex, especially for women. Stuff can get in the urethra that may cause UTI's, even more so if you use a form of insertable birth control. Same holds true for guys but it is not as common.

I've always peed after sex and never gotten a UTI. I'm going to keep doing it.

I heard it's good to pee after sex or masturbating.
04/22/2012
I've always heard that you should, because it prevents bacteria from growing that might be close to the urethra. I always have to right afterwards - I don't think I've ever not had to go when we're done.
04/22/2012
Yes, atleast I always do just because I've read it more than once in girly magazines.

Peeing is good after sex. Decreases your chances of contracting UTI.
04/22/2012
Yes, always remember to pee, and don't just brush it off... It's just as important for guys as well as girls.

It's SO important for me to pee after sex (within 45 minutes, in fact) to flush out the bacteria that's gotten into our urinary tract. I used to get bladder infections everytime I had sex, then my doctor told me to pee afterwards, and voila, they've disappeared ; it's saved me a LOT of uncomfortable pain.

I almost always do, never had a UTI!

Urinating after sex is an excellent idea. It will not guarantee that you don't get a UTI - but it substantially reduces the chances. Someone on EF probably has the numbers - but it does matter.

I've read repeatedly that it helps flush stuff out of the urethra that might've gotten up there while having sex, and reduces the chance of a UTI. I usually do.
04/23/2012
I always do because I've read the same thing time and time again so it's a habit now
04/23/2012
I have been told this by my primary care Dr and by my Gyn.
04/23/2012
Yes it's true you should always pee after sex and clean up, I usually go for baby wipes or another shower.
06/01/2012
Yes peeing is good you also shouldn't use baby wipes as they can cause an imbalance in bacteria which also causes infection.
06/04/2012
Always a good idea!

Yes, it helps flush out anything unsavory that was pushed into the urethra during the act.

It is a good idea.
