Vixskin + Corn Starch?

We've just bought our first ever Vixskin toy, the Johnny Vixskin, and love it. However, we've found that the Vixskin material is a little tacky/sticky to the touch and wondered whether it's safe to use Corn Starch on it to try to give it a more realistic feel, and if so, would that have to be rinsed off prior to use (i.e. insertion)?

Thanks!

Since Vixskin is silicone, I don't think there would be any issues with dusting it with cornstarch. However, I would rinse it off first before using it vaginally. Cornstarch could potentially promote an infection.

That's just the info we needed. Thanks Kindred

No, it'd be fine to try.

I found that after a few months the Goodfella became less sticky. If you don't want to use corn starch, try a medicated powder that does not have talcum powder (my mom has some she uses for those areas... so it's certain to be safe for penetration, I'm sure.)

I'd be very wary of inserting any materials into your vagina that aren't specifically designed to go there (as well as some of the ones that are!). We have a very delicate little mini-ecosystem in there. Corn starch could feed your natural yeast and cause a yeast infection, the same way sugar would. A medicated powder could kill some of the good bacteria that keep the yeast in check, just as antibiotics do--again resulting in a yeast infection.

I'm not sure why you would need to put any kind of powder on your VixSkin Johnny. Just keep it in a clean place, like its plastic cylinder or a toybox of some kind, and wash or rinse it before use. The best thing to put on it for a more realistic feel before use would be a water-based lube.

I certainly would not use corn starch. It's not going to preserve the silicone, and you really don't want it inside you. Just put a good amount of Maximus water based lube on your dildo before use, and your good to go. No more tacky feeling.

Thanks for all the replies. Well, it's been over half a year and now own both the Johnny and Goodfella. We've used cornstarch on both when it's just foreplay but rinse it off prior to internal use with no side effects to either us or the toys (in fact we also own several Fleshlights that we give exactly the same treatment to and that's why we asked in the first place). Oddly enough after researching this, it seems that a lot of websites suggest that you should use cornstarch on silicone toys since it prolongs their life, prevents the outer layer of the silicone from hardening and absorbs moisture.

And to Mr John - thanks but we're both allergic to the parabens in Maximus. That one lube probably causes more discomfort than we'd have if we left the cornstarch on the dildo! But of course, we DO use a good amount of water based lube (Sliquid Sassy Booty or Probe Thick & Rich usually)

Oh and FieryRed - thanks for the heads up on the medicated powder idea too. Luckily we haven't tried that but we'll still steer clear.

Thank's for the great feedback. Good to know about Maximus. I will be more cautious about suggesting it. I'm glad you did your research. Thanks to you, I will also reconsider your Vixskin preservation technique. With all the money we have invested in the line, it makes sense to take care of it while being stored.

Wonder if other starches, like potato starch or tapioca starch, would be better for the body or just the same?

No problem! I've become wary of putting just about anything in the vaginal area, after all the stuff I've learned.

Regarding the corn starch/silicone thing, though, the only online place I found that suggested it would prevent hardening of the outer layer was a comment on a post on ask.metafilter, in which the commenter said that a salesperson suggested it. You shouldn't need to worry about absorbing moisture with silicone, as it's non-porous, so moisture won't cause bacteria to infest your lovely toy. Also, I've never heard of (or experienced) silicone hardening over time. Can you tell me where to find the info you found? I'm very curious now!

On the other hand, from what I know, I can't imagine that corn starch would harm your silicone toys, either.

I have a Mustang and the hubby does use corn starch on it after he cleans it. It does give it a great feel but it also keeps it from getting sticky. ( in case you couldn't tell he's in charge of the toy maintenance)
