So you read 'Fifty Shades' and now you want to be a sub...

Yes, I get it. You read all three of the ‘Fifty Shades’ books in one weekend, you’ve looked up some stuff on the Internet about BDSM, and now, you’re DYING to be a sub, right? You even typed up a contract just like the one in the book, went and bought a pair of handcuffs, and put a wanted ad in the craigslist personals looking for a Dom. Right?

You can read the rest here!

Great work! You've really said what needs to be said about this issue. Though I cannot understand why any woman would want a guy like Christian Grey. He is not dominant; he's an abusive stalker. The main character, Anastasia, is lucky she didn't end up in pieces buried under concrete.

Because it's like a fairy tale. Think of all the Disney fairy tales.... almost all the princes had some weird quality about them. Not to mention, so many women like 'bad boys'. It's a fun fantasy, but in real life, there just needs to be more to it.

Well done! Although I haven't read the books (and don't plan to) I've read some blog entries about them. One thing that really struck me (ha, ha, no pun intended!) is that at the end of the first book she's finally asking him to go ahead and do his worst or something like that, and ends up getting hit six times with a belt. I want to repeat that for clarity: His worst is six strokes of a belt.
Now, I know all the really GOOD D-types would negotiate a scene beforehand, but not everyone is that good.
I just have this image of some poor beginner who's only just read the books strolling up to someone and asking for just whatever, go ahead and do what you will and . . . well, six belt lashings is not exactly intense hardcore play for a lot of us. Seriously.

Six strokes of a belt? The guy acts like a total creep, and that's the worst he can do? Geez, don't make me laugh!

you’ll be the one that ends up fifty shades of fucked up.

I laughed so hard omg. This is an awesome article. The Craigslist example is exactly why these women need to take a step back and get a reality check. Grown women should know better, really.

HAHAHAHA. Six?!?! That's it?? I terror in fear! Hell, if it wasn't with a belt (I have a trigger with belts), I might be able to sleep through six hits.

If that's what women think S&M looks like, then I feel like I should start linking to bloodplay sites or something to let people know what's out there for real. Since 50 Shades is gonna minimize things, maybe if I show extra extreme examples women will chill the fuck out with this book already.

Side note: I just found out my mom is reading this book. She says something is wrong with people who are into things like this. I guess I should be glad she didn't get hit with sub frenzy, but I still weep that this book furthers her ignorant opinion of BDSM relationships and lifestyles. One big middle finger to everything about this series.

Forgot to add: I imagine that for a bored, vanilla housewife who read these books, six whacks with a belt seems like some hardcore beating.

I can see the Craigslist ad: "Bored Vanilla Housewife ISO Hardcore Beating".
That is totally going to be the title of my first erotic novel.

Great job, I think this is happening so often right now and people need to be aware of all that it entails.

I agree! It is much more than it seems to be on the surface!

Great article! While I myself am not a part of the BDSM culture or lifestyle, I still find 50 Shades of Grey extremely unrepresentative and dangerous. As I said in my review of the book, it's like EL James just read a Wikipedia article on BDSM and based a book on it. People are jumping into the BDSM lifestyle without proper education about all aspects of the lifestyle.

I feel like I shouldn't put the books down until I read them... but I will anyway. Everything I've heard points to them being bad. But I did get through twilight so maybe I should try and get through this?

I actually LOVED the books. They weren't exactly well written... there were grammatical errors, and some repetition, and I also loved Twilight. But I loved the plot, and regardless of the misinformation, as long as you aren't looking for some sort of intro guide to BDSM, and can take the books at face value for what they are worth, I think it will be fine!

Excellent article! Thanks for sharing. I know a few people who have become pretty obsessed with this series and they seem very misinformed. I think I'll be sending them links to this.
I haven't read the books, other than a few snippets. I don't think I'd like them so I won't pay money for them.

The plot is decent, and as long as you aren't looking for a literary masterpiece, they're a pretty good read!
