Should there be a privacy option in profiles?

Contributor: freshbananas freshbananas
A few weeks back I asked if people put their photos in their profile and a lot of peole said no because of work. Do you think it should be an option to shut down your profile to non EF memembers? I think it might be a good thing, reviews, posts and articles open the public but profiles with the option of privacy might promote more opneness on EF : )

I voted no, and I'll explain why. That kind of feature would turn Eden into more of a Social Networking Site (like FaceBook, MySpace, etc.). Eden isn't a social networking site, it's a business site. They are here to make money, and we get a slice of the pie through our participation in THEIR money making efforts. I don't think it would make business sense to start having a social networking feel here, because it wouldn't benefit incoming customers.

Just my $0.02.

Also, on any site, a members only privacy setting is a false security anyway. Anyone can join with minimal effort, look at what they want to see, screencap it if they're up to something unpleasant, and then leave the site forever.

I said no for this reason as well. While I can see why some might want to have that personal info up and not have to worry, it would be too much of a social network, and also people come here to just read reviews and sometimes follow a specific person (who may have a lot in common with them) and their reviews, so that would make it difficult for them to do.

If employers really cared about looking into people's sex toy providers, they would make a profile to search for people. I doubt anyone is this sad, though...

Very good point. I take measures to protect my identity so I'm sure if people wanted their privacy, they could have it.

Meant to type "I guess no". One can manage to have privacy just fine without such solutions.

I'm so not private. Maybe too open, but it's just simply my personality. I just don't like hiding behind anything and feel pretty OK with putting myself out there. I can see the privacy thing being something that brings more comfort to many though. I of course do not EVER want my fam or people in my community knowing about me in this way. It's not something that would do me good, but people would totally turn things around. Not my family, no way, but this stuff (sex) is something too personal for me wanting my mom and dad to have to endure. Lol. However, I don't care too terribly much what the rest of the people think of me. Only my loved ones. I don't quite understand though, how allowing someone to have a "private profile" turns EF into social networking?
