Announcement: Community Member Has Been Banned

Contributor: gone77 gone77
Hello, everyone:

I have an announcement to make. As of today, contributor Sarah Marlatt has been banned from EdenFantasys. This came as a result of the following infractions:

Plagiarism
Multiple accounts
Point-farming
Abuse of the flagging system (excessive and retaliation)
Retaliation down-voting of reviews

She had been suspended for one month, but incidents continued after her suspension was lifted and that has resulted in the banning.

This public announcement comes from our wish to be completely transparent with our community. We also wish that any and all comments on this thread be civil and respectful.

Thank you.

Thanks for letting us know, Kristi, and thanks, EF for making sure this is a safe, fair, and comfortable community.

Thanks for letting us know, Kristi. I really appreciate all that you, and everyone at EF does to make our community and enjoyable one for all involved.

Aww...that makes me sad.

BUT, I am so very grateful for the fact that EF staffers take plagiarism seriously (to me this is a horribly serious thing). Not to mention the multiple accounts and point farming...I see this as EF protecting its reviewers and community as a whole.

This never comes easily to EF staff, so keep doing your jobs wonderfully and we still love you all.

Wow, I feel like a fucking idiot.

I just sent her a message yesterday after seeing her write about her mistakes and her suspension. She seemingly had admitted her wrongs etc and was saying how glad she was she was given another chance to turn it around.

My message thanked her for now being a positive member.

Thanks guys.

Jeeze you would think the points awarded from regular use of the site would be enough! I am always amazed at how quickly they accumulate.

I am also glad that there are consequences for those who abuse the flagging system. This is a system put in place to make sure that the members of online communities feel safe and are not being bullied and/or verbally abused. It should be taken very seriously and it is good to see that this is the case on Eden.

Thank you Kristi for making this announcement promptly, and a big thanks to the Eden staff for dealing with this in a gracious and respectful way.

Have a good weekend, staffers! You work hard and deserve it

I agree. Without point farming or additional accounts, I've accumulated plenty of points so far and have donated to both months' families so far and still have some left for myself. It seems like an unnecessary cheat to me.

But what really disappoints me is plagarism. I mean, that is a serious infraction to me. Someone worked so hard for their review, article, descriptive review, etc. It's more than just finding the easy way out, it's robbing someone of their hard work, creativity, and originality. It's just like that other adult online store stealing EF contributors' reviews to sale products on their page. It's just so low.

And I had no idea she was doing any of that so it's very surprising to me. I sure hope she takes this as a lesson to be learned and really takes some time for self-reflection. She seemed nice enough on the forum and she owes it to herself to work to be a better person. We all make mistakes and wrong choices, but we all have to power to change and improve ourselves to live a more honest and fulfilling life. That way, any recognition or admiration we receive will be well earned and real reflections of our efforts.

Wow, plagiarism? Yikes. Glad that EF caught that and took the appropriate action. I was kind of surprised to see her pop back up after the suspension but it seemed like she had turned herself around and that the down-voting and such had stopped. It sucks that it apparently didn't...

Oh well. Thanks as always for keeping us aware of this. I do appreciate the transparency.

I'm not even exactly sure what Plagiarism is, but thought this might happen after some posts I read earlier today. Thanks for letting us know!

I have been trying to gather points by voting on reviews and a few other things. At what point does it become farming?

Plagarism is stealing another person's work, ideas, or words and passing them off as your own without any credit given to the person you took it from. It can be from taking someone's ideas for a video, using their pictures they took of a product, or copying word-for-word someone's review. It's a grave offense, whether in school, in business, or here on EF. My alma mater would actually permanently expell people from the university for plagarism.

And that's a good question about point farming. I think once you're doing things that require secrecy from the admins, you're doing something wrong. Like creating new accounts to get around the daily maximums to rack up points or posting 10 (or however many) new discussions a day for the points that are pointless and superfluous. Or submitting a bogus review.

Plagiarism is taking someone else's work...in this case I would imagine their review writing. Not cool!

Also, my two cents, though I'm not an administrator so I can't say for sure. I think many of us are a little more active now that we have the points as an incentive. I don't think it's farming if you are genuinely contributing to the community. For example, reading reviews and voting on them accordingly isn't point farming in my personal understanding. But if you are, for example, posting a bunch of reviews of toys that you've never even used to get points, or posting a bunch of forum topics that are full of single sentence questions, that is what I understand as point farming. Another example would be adding people and then un-adding them immediately after just to get the points.

Yeah, pretty much.

The funny thing that some people don't get is that we can see things on the "back end" of the site, like the forum posts with "lol" or some such over and over again.

I agree with this decision, sorry that this had to come to this. Like others I though she was becoming a part of the community, I was glad she was brave enough to come back and do it the right way. Boy was I wrong.

I know that Eden did not like to do this but I am glad to see that y'all are on top of things.

I think that it is EF's way of trying to be transparent, upfront and honest with members of the community. I believe these announcements are made with only good intentions, and they are done in a very impersonal way--as they should be.

There have been very extensive forum postings regarding how this should be handled and I think that the way EF is handling it now is to the best of their ability.

Yeah, my school would expel me for plagiarism. It's a VERY serious offense. This is an unfortunate situation, and I imagine difficult for all involved. What I want to know is what's going to stop her from just making another account?

Thank you for your transparency and thank you for banning this member.

Was she constantly making new accounts, or was she always changing her screen name? I swear she went through 3 or 4 different names on the same account??

Going through multiple names on one account isn't such a bad thing. Some people just don't stick with the same thing. I'm too much of a creature of habit to change mine though.

She did just change her username from Sarah Marlett to "Sera" though, so that's just one of them I know about?

Thanks for letting us know Kristi.

I noticed that too. And, as I saw, this was done after the ban.

If this individual was banned, how were they able to change their username?

Hopefully her own sense of decency has got up to her by now and she realizes breaking her own suspension/banning wouldn't make her any friends here. After all, she's out for breaking rules and breaking another one will make it impossible to see her as a changed person.

I certainly support this decision and impressed in that EF is so proactive. I am disappointed that this had to be and I missed it. With reviews, I am a "speed reader" , so I don't spend time parsing words but reviews that don't say anything overall (to me), I just pass over, w/o comment or a rating.
Plagiarism is always totally unacceptable.
As for "point farming", I find the points add up fairly quickly w/o any "extra" effort.
I think I have been hanging around here going on 3 years; it is a challenge to keep up with the new members much less those who change their ID. I think mine, Liz2, is uninteresting but I will probably keep it...

She had several accounts going on at the same time - and would post to the different accounts within minutes of each other. This was also what she did the first time she got banned.

Changing one's name in their one account is fine, that's our right since we're given the option. Creating three or four different accounts and using all of them as she did ... yeah.
