if not using any silicone toys, use silicone based lube, it will be thicker and will last longer and feel better than any water based lube. I guess it's more personal preference.

Silicone based lubes will last longer with less re-application needed and work great for wet environments. But clean up is more involved, you will need to use soap and water to clean if off if needed/wanted. Water based lubes like Maximus or Anal Lube are thicker than any silicone lube but will not last as long and may require re-application. Water based can also be cleaned off with just a wet cloth. Oil based lubes can work good too but are not always good for the vaginal fauna so you have to consider that too.

My favorites (Anal play with just toys) are Maximus for the water based and Better Sex Essentials for the silicone.

Thicker lubes tend to work better, also make sure that you aren't sensitive to anything in the lube. I used to use Maximus, which was great until I developed a sensitivity to it - now I use Probe Thick and Rich. A bit less thick, and a little stringy, but not expensive, works well, and doesn't trigger any reactions/burning.

If you're not using rubber/latex you can use oil lubes. They don't have the dry out problem, but they are a little harder to clean up after.
