Spit is not consistent. Sometimes it's a decent anal lube consistency and slick, other times it is thin and watery. Sometimes it has little bits of stuff in it from food (brushing and rinsing don't get them all out), sometimes it just doesn't seem to work for some reason. If you know what works you can know when the spit will work, but relying on it if you don't know can be asking for trouble.
