Well, "IT" happens.
Knowing your system, eating right and having a BM before hand will help. The rectum does not store the poo, so most of the time it is empty. You could also use a douche or enema if you are worried, just do it before (like an hour or so).

Just being aware of when the last time you pooped helps. Use and enema if you think you need it, or take a quick shower and slip a finger up just to check that everything's clean.

Nope, never happened and I used have anal sex fairly often. Douche, and make sure to have a BM that day.

I'm really picky about when I'll have anal sex, so no, this hasn't happened to me. Like everyone else has said, it's a good idea to make sure you've had a BM that day, and douching can help get rid of any left over stuff. Enemas aren't great to do often, but you can do them occasionally if you feel like it. I find that, for me, having a BM the same day is enough. If I don't feel like everything is perfect with my digestion and whatnot that day, I just skip the anal sex and wait until I feel a bit more balanced.
But yeah, it's perfectly normal for that to happen. No biggie (though I don't think I'd be able to help being embarrassed).

I would go with everyone's advice on having a BM that day possibly close to the moment if you can. I have anal on a regular basis, sometimes more frequently than vaginal, and this hasn't happened to me yet.
On the flip side it has happened to my boyfriend when I was pegging him. He was a bit bothered by it, but I blew it off. I told him it's to be expected considering what we're doing. It doesn't phase me at all.

It's happened to me a number of times both with my partner and with toys. Can't say I'm incredibly bothered if it happens, though - like JR said, take a break, sink the titanic and move on!

well, to avoid that next time, i would suggest not eating a fibrous meal and knowing your limits. i would be a little embarrased, but it wouldn't kill me. luckily nothing like this has happened to me

I think all the suggestions are pretty good. Know your body, being the first rule. BM a couple hours prior. Maybe a bulb enema if you want to be extra clean. Don't do the big bag enemas. Those clear out the colon as well and end up leaving little specks in the rectum, no matter how many times you clean out.
The penetrating partner should also be paying attention during the foreplay. A lubed finger should come back reasonably clean. Ditto for any smaller warm-up toys. He'll know it if he hits any nuggets.
I also suggest doing it over a towel or having a towel handy just for those unexpected klingons during withdrawal, especially if you've gotten pretty vigorous.
