Anal sex is becoming increasingly common activity among people. According to a survey conducted by the CDC of over 12,000 people ages 20-24, 33% of men and 30% of women reported having had anal sex with a different-sex partner. With ages 35 to 39, 42% of men and 34% of women have done it with an opposite-sex partner. All of these statistics are higher than they've been in the past.

I expected this number to be higher actually (if everyone was honest lol)... I think that people in general have a "taboo" against anal sex... so I think that a lot of people would lie about having anal sex...

I definately expect the number to rise in the future...

Just watch the porn industry, it accuratly shows future trends because it's what starts them. Anal was extremely rare in porn in the early 90's, by the turn of the millenium, 80% of all porn had anal scenes. Today it's more around 95%. The idea trickles down from adults who view the movies to teens over the internet, especially now that the internet makes porn so much more accessible.

The next common place trend you will see is Ass-to-Mouth. In ten years time the trend predicts ATM will be about 2 out of 5 women.

There's no denying that anal is becoming entirely commonplace in porn, and I agree that it's just a matter of time before it becomes nearly as commonplace in the average bedroom. Not mine, though, unless my wife suddenly changes her mind about experimenting with it.

I thought the number would be higher because it seems to me that anal sex is like the next big step. I feel like it's practically expected, like you lost your virginity with someone, but now you need to have anal sex.

I voted both higher and lower than I expected. It's higher for men than I expected (especially noting "different sex partner) but that's assuming being on the receiving end. Hmm. I guess it needs more details. I do expect the numbers to go up though.

For a long time, I was very much against it, and thought it was something girls just did to please their boyfriends. Then I started reading more erotica that incorporated it, and found some that were even written by women talking about how much they enjoyed it. The more I learned about it, the more intrigued I got. Now, I love it.

I expected the number to be higher, perhaps some don't want to admit to having anal sex? The numbers are increasing as anal seems fairly common among people in their 20's.

As more people learn how to properly warm up and use proper lube I think the number will go up in the future. Once there is no expectation of pain the taboo should disappear.

I expect the numbers to go up in the future too. I think it's something that the current generation of (what I refer to as) kids is doing it a lot more now than my generation did when we were that age. So I think more and more it will become the norm.

That's much lower than I would have expected---anal sex was even more natural to me than vaginal sex when I was a teenager (and I was using anal dildos before I lost my virginity, and didn't start using vaginal dildos til I lost it), and I am surprised that only around a third of people will admit to having tried it.

Especially that ~30% is how many people *have ever tried it*. I could see people trying it and deciding they don't like it, but I'm seriously shocked that only a third of people have even *tried*!

If you were in your 40's I would agree there's little hope in her changing but your in your 20's and I assume she's in hers as well. You're in the generation that it started becoming commonplace. If you ever listen to today's teens talk sex, anal is a huge chunk of the conversation now. I've sat in a few planned parenthoods and read the waiting room diaries. It tells a lot of what today's generation is up to, and anal is definatly on their minds.

People are more aware of lube so more women are probably enjoying anal.

I think some people are still reluctant to admit if they've done it. But oral sex used to be the same way, so perhaps a few years down the road, it'll be less taboo.

Anal is where oral was in the 1950's. Folks did it, but NEVER "admitted" it.

I bet the numbers ARE higher. In a survey, face to face or even with a researcher doing written response, people hesitate to write out things they think are "fringe" or not "PC". I think that there is STILL a large Taboo in the USA (more then many nations)toward anal and thus people might DO it, but I am not sure they would tell a surveyor they do.

BINGO. Actually, doing RETROSPECTIVE surveys (ie. "what were YOU doing in the 40's and 50's"), you find people admitting that they WERE doing oral and the numbers work out to be over 75%, where as POLLS take at that time showed it to be done by less then 18%!!!! A HUGE difference and inaccuracy. Actually heard about THAT example in a graduate medical STATISTICS class!!!!!

I think the number is an under reported statistic, especially given the taboo nature of the act. I think this is changing dramatically fast, both the number and how much cultural taboo is placed on anal sex in the US, but still think it's a bit lower than what's really happening in the bedrooms these days.
