Merry xmas, Im not against xmas, but I don't celebrate religiously. I work retail and tell people merry xmas, it's their freedom and right not to celebrate, it's also mine to say merry xmas. If people get offended then i'll apologize. However since ive been saying merry xmas, almost everyone has thanked me for saying that rather than happy holidays.

I say merry Christmas because if someone's that touchy about it they wouldn't have wanted to be my friend anyways

Half of my friends celebrate other main holidays, so I say Happy Holidays. Besides that everyone who celebrates X-mas also celebrates New Years. So, Happy Holidays works for everyone without imposing the majorities holiday on minorities.

I generally say Merry Christmas mostly because it has always been Christmas for me. I have no problem with Happy Holidays either, and will sometimes say that.
