When I was a young teen, I was told by an adult that only girls who masturbated would get cramps -- in hindsight I'm pretty appalled by the double whammy of shaming in that lie. It made me afraid to take Advil for my cramps and reinforced the idea that masturbation is Bad, at least until I learned better in sex ed.

Has anyone else heard this one, or others like it?

Honestly, I've really only heard of the hairy palms, you'll go blind, etc. I grew up in a pretty sex positive environment fortunately.

Even in the 50's & 60's my parents were not into shaming us about sexuality. They had a ton of problems of their own - too many to be dispensing advice!

I was told that everyone would know if I had premarital sex because a woman's hips spread...whatever the hell that means! I was already having sex by that point and pretty well educated so I just smiled and rolled my eyes. I hate those myths cause they fall intot he catagory of "loose women" referring to the stupid and insulting belief that a woman's vagina stretches out with frequent use or that a woman who has had a child is no longer 'tight'. It's totally ridiculous and stupid to boot but I actually met a woman completely pretrified to use a vibrator cause she felt every guy would know!
It's just sad the way women are made to fear their sexuality.

I've never heard that one before, thats a doozie!
I heard of the hairy palms and going blind, but only in relation to guys wanking, none for females.

that is unless you include the urban legends such as the girl who masturbated with a test tube and it broke inside her etc

I heard that girls are always supposed to sit with their legs closed because if they sat with them open it meant they wanted to have sex so people who saw them sitting like that would think they were promiscuous or slutty and it may attract unwanted male attention. ....weird.

Priests told male friends of mine that they would spend centuries in purgatory for masturbating once, and spend eternity in hell if they masturbated habitually.

Another priest shouted similar threats at a female friend who confessed she had read an erotic book. When she came out of the confessional, everyone was staring at her.

I never personally heard any shaming myths, though I have heard in passing about the hairy palms thing.
