Time travel hypothetical: If you got sent back in time how long do you have to be stuck there for sex to no longer be considered cheating?

Contributor: namelesschaos namelesschaos
So I was watching a SciFi show the other day that had a time travel scenario and to simplify it to the points relevant to my question (the full scenario is more complicated). Guy got sent to the past and by the end of the day had sex with a women who will end up giving birth to a man he is looking for in the present. My question comes in because he was in a serious monogamous relationship at the time he was sent back and had spent less than a day (as in the sun was up, and hadn’t even set yet day) in the past total. Thus, he had no more than a few hours in the past before be so scared of never being able to return that he was banging someone else. Everyone who has seen the show in question has agreed it counts as cheating because how quickly he hoped in bed with someone else, had he spent some more time in the (even as little as sleeping on it) they could see it otherwise.

Which all leads to the question how long would you have to be stuck in the past, assuming you got sent back while in a relationship, before it would no longer be an act of cheating to sleep with someone.

So does culture shock make people horny or something?

I'd be too busy figuring out how to survive than worrying about trying to get laid. It also depends on what era and where I end up, and the culture's view of women (rape is not a crime for most of human history).

Anyways, I'll probably spontaneously combust due to the paradox involved.

I'm not sure exactly. As long as it takes for you to be certain that you cant get back to your own time I guess.

If my partner seriously got stuck, I'd want him to have a blast but no diseases.

However, if he comes back, I'm allowed my fun too!

This is interesting to think about.

Well, as far as the cheating is concerned, was any kind of effort made to get back to the present? I wouldn't resign myself to "cheating" until I knew I was well and truly stuck in my predicament.

In reality, though, I'd be more concerned about causing a paradox! What if I caused someone to be born (or not to be born) and changed the course of history?!?!? Yes, I watch more bad sci-fi than is good for me.

If I went back in time I wouldn't touch anything, people included, for fear of destroying the universe or something.

It would have to be many months to years if this were to ever happen to me. There would be so many other things to worry about. I asked my partner and he said it would depend on what time period he ended up in. He said, and I quote, "Now if I'm with Marilyn Monroe...it'd be a few hours. Not gunna lie, she was babealicious."

Since you would be going "back" in time, and that would mean a time before you met your SO, you wouldn't be cheating. How can you cheat on someone before you ever met them?

You'd probably create a paradox so I'd avoid it. But if I was stuck there for years I'd probably find someone new.

Well in the context of the show he was activity pursuing a lead when he met the women in question. She was the nurse of the young version of the man whose supernatural powers sent him back, already had major clues that he could in fact return him to the present and could safely assume people in the present where working on a way to bring him back from their end, (finding the old version of the man)...however somewhere in the process of talking to her to gain access to him become talking to her to gain access to her pants (and the show made it very clear that it wasn't part of the plan to sleep with her. His explanation was he was so scared of not getting back to his own time ,that he took a detour from getting back to his own time to bang the hot nurse he just met, as you might guess the fans of the show are not impressed with the writing of this plot arc )

The same way people in the past could cheat on their SO with you despite you not even being born yet.

If traveling back before the point you met your SO your means "you haven't ever met" them, then by that logic traveling back before the point where you were born would mean you where not born yet, either. The time travel doesn't negate that you have in fact met them anymore then it negates the fact that you were born in this scenario.
