If you get a good amount of fiber (you can drink Metamucil to supplement) in your diet, you're not going to have much if any residue in the first few inches of your rectum, where your prostate is. You can use a finger condom or glove to lightly clean the inside of your butt by fingering it a bit in the bathroom (using some lube of course). This will also get you somewhat pre-lubricated for whatever activity will follow. Occasional residue is a reality of anal play. It's something most people just deal with.

90% of the time I do a clean out, wait about 30-45 min and then go to it. As long as you are only douching there should only be a minimal amount of water/stuff left. If you do an enema (there's really not need for this) you will need to wait for at least an hour or more as it will take more time for you colon to flush it all out. The main reason to wait after doing a douche is to allow the rectum's mucus time to reform.
Like csweatc is saying, if you have had a good BM before hand, I find little mess that has to be dealt with. Some paper towels close at hand can be a big help, just in case.

Play around with yourself a bit to see how much is left and how much you'd be comfortable with. Gloves and paper towels help, but if you're not completely comfortable then it's harder to relax and enjoy anal play.
If you decide to try douching (really a small enema), make sure that you use only warm water and get a good setup. You shouldn't need to use more than about a cup to a cup and a half of water unless you're planning for something really deep, such as intense fisting or really long toys (longer than 7" insertable).

If you are going to give yourself an enema pre-anal play, just buy a fleet enema from the drug store. Open it, dump it out, rinse it and fill it with warm water. Insert the tip and apply a little lube. There is a picture on the fleet box that will show you the proper position. Use it, hold it, expell it. Clean your bottle and save it for reuse. Wait about 2 hours to make sure everything is out of your rectum. Have fun with a lot of lube. This is basically the advice of Nina Hartley and it works.

Then before I start to play, I wait a little while. When I'm ready I lube up the toy and insert and away I go.
It doesn't take much time, but I like the feeling of a rinse out and fee more comfortable playing with my ass afterward.
