Do You Know Anyone Who Fits This Description...?

Contributor: Ansley Ansley
I was having a conversation with my husband, and we were talking about someone we used to know a long, long time ago in a land far, far away. This person is legit homophobic when it comes to two women being in a relationship together, but is perfectly accepting of two men being together. Their best friend in life was a gay male---flamboyent at that. However, this person's daughter is a lesbian and they still cannot accept her preferences.

I'm wondering how many other people know someone who is accepting of one type of homosexual relationship, but not another. The logic simply confuses me to no end.

I've known someone like that and also someone who was legitimately Hetero-phobic and believed the only true relationships were between two people of the same gender.

This one seems more unusual than the other way around. As above, I've come across plenty of people who are fine with lesbians (or girl/girl in general) but are absolutely homophobic when it comes to guys. I've got no time for double standards.

I think you just made my brain explode. How on earth did they talk themselves into believing that nonsense?

Yeah, it just strikes me as really, really odd that they're fine with two men being together but not two women. Kind of makes me wonder if there is an episode of same-sex assault in their past. Though, I caution against such assumptions.

Yes, the more common stereotype is the straight guy who's cool with the fantasy of lesbians (two conventionally attractive college girls going at it for attention) but not gay men. But then, these guys are rarely cool with lesbians who aren't designed for their entertainment.

But I find it just as believable that someone would be cool with gay men and not with lesbians. Although they are a minority and certainly have their share of struggles, gay men are also generally viewed as paragons of culture, taste, and innovation. The stereotypical "gay male friend" is generally very highly sought after in hetero circles. So someone might be cool with gay men because they are seen as colorful, cheerful, and edgy... lesbians, not so much.

But both mindsets generalize large groups of people and disregard their individual qualities. If someone who thinks this way were to look deeper into these groups, they would find a variety of people, many of whom they would like to associate with, and many they would not.

This is fairly common, actually.

Just now say this.

Very good explaination.

it's common for folks to be "okay" with one gender, but not another.

Awesome way of breaking it down! I've only met people who were either "all-in" or "all-out", but two chicks experimenting together is always "a-ok" in that subset of individuals I've run into.

It may have to do with the fact that their daughter's homosexuality is much closer "to home" than her best friends'. My grandmother is exactly like this... her best friend is a gay man, but she's given me a few reasons to believe she would not be OK with me being with women (which I currently am).
