One angle you can go at this is norms. Society sees and wants boys and girls to be a specific way. Difference is feared, change upsets the norm. People don't like it, it may creep them out, scare them. What do you do when something scares you? When it's human to human, people usually get angry. It gives a chance for some to feel part of something by picking on someone and bullying them for their differences.
