Maybe so. But "she" broke the rules and lied about it. Should that just be ignored?

"She" is a woman. No scare-quotes about it. If you're referring to reconstructive surgery/plastic surgery/etc. -- if every contestant who ever underwent any form of reconstructive or cosmetic surgery was disqualified from pageantry, I have the feeling we'd have a pretty small pool of contestants. (And if you're going on the "but trans women are really men" theory, you're not going to get a lot of mileage on a subsection of EdenFantasys forums mostly populated with transgender people and the people in relationships with them.)

"While Miss Universe Canada’s rules do not mention sex changes or cosmetic surgery...they do state that each contestant must be a “naturally born female.”"

She violated one of the rules, I don't think they had much choice but to kick her out.

Maybe she truly considers herself a naturally born female. She may not have considered that a lie when she put it in the form.

The rules are pretty explicit with the 'naturally born female' thing. I don't feel that the rule should be on the list of rules at all, though.

One the legal sense...yes. She broke a rule and should be removed.

On the moral sense, however? No. She's a woman and deserves to be able to compete.

They have taken back the ruling on this and she will be allowed to compete. Just thought I would update people because it changes the discussion a bit.

I hadn't heard they had changed the ruling. I knew there was a big article on it about not allowing her to compete. Thanks for the update.

Wow, good news. Thanks for the update.

From the Vancouver Sun:

"Jenna Talackova . . . holds legal documents — including a passport, birth certificate and driver's licence — affirming her identity as a woman . . .

'As long as she meets the standards of legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, which we understand that she does, Jenna Talackova is free to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant' said Michael Cohen, special counsel to Trump and executive vice president of his business group."

"While Miss Universe Canada’s rules do not mention sex changes or cosmetic surgery, as the Change.org petition points out, they do state that each contestant must be a 'naturally born female.'"

I wonder if the brain is "natural" or the body is more "natural". Hehe.

Even if they let her back, it's very unlikely she will win. That's the way society is.

She was naturally born female. She was naturally born a female with a penis.

As I understand it, sex is female/male, gender is woman/man.
So... as female indicates sex, she was born male, but a woman.

^ this is from a few resources I've received. Please share if you have others with information otherwise.

I don't dispute that the rule is entirely unnecessary and offensive; I'm very glad that she was readmitted into the pageant.

Hopefully this will help add to some positive trans images in the media.

To some, the word "sex" may refer to a variety of things including genitals, chromosomes, dominant sex hormone in the body, etc. Therefore, the terminology is pretty problematic D:.

I see this years pageant being the most watched of all the pageants of the past ten years or so.

She did not break the rules. The rules say you need to be female, NOT that you need to have been born with a vagina

I was actually watching an interview with her with my conservative mother and I was actually pretty shocked because my mom wasnt saying rude things about her and was genuinely interested. Perhaps there's hope for me yet and this woman's bravery has helped to instill some bravery in myself.
