Chestnuts roasting on an open fire? How about at YOUR place?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
I LOVE chestnuts. Little carts around my old northern college campus used to sell them in little paper bags...HOT, in the winter. You would go into class and everyone had their coffee, hot chocolate or cider (from other vendors) and a bag of chestnuts.

They are a wonderful holiday memory for me....but I don't see many folks using them now days....don't even see many sold in the stores.

Do you roast/bake or otherwise use Chestnuts at the holidays????

I absolutely love roasted chestnuts. I can only have two or three, but they're very good.

I don't think I've ever had one before. I like most other types of nuts though. I'll have to see where I can find some.

I chose other because there was no option for me... No, but only because I have no clue where to get them to even try them.

My creative writing teacher in college was from West Virginia and told us this grand story about eating chestnuts when she was a kid. When she discovered that maybe two people in the class had ever eaten, much less tasted, a chestnut, she brought in a bag of them and shared them. That was one of my favorite days in that class. Having only ever eaten that one, I haven't developed a taste for or against them.

I love roast chestnuts, but their shells are a hassle to remove. I only buy vacuum packed shelled chestnuts at Asian markets, they taste almost as good as the fresh roasted ones.

I first thought 'color of horse'. LOL Funny that would be an option.

We roast marshmallows, though.
