June 12th is Loving Day! On this day in 1967, the United States Supreme Court overturned anti-miscegenation laws that, at the time, still remained in 16 states. These laws banned inter-racial marriages - some banning marriage across any races, and all banning marriage between whites and people of color.
This holiday got its name from the court case that the Supreme Court was judging, Loving Vs. Virginia (what a serendipitous last name!). It is not yet an official holiday in the US, but there is a movement to make it so.
It always gives me warm fuzzies on this day knowing that my partner and I are fortunate enough to live in a time when people of different races maintain the right to marry one another. So, how about you guys? Had you heard of Loving Day before this post? Got any plans to celebrate?
