My great, great, great, great grandfather was one of the leading forefathers of this country. He died at Bunker Hill when he took a bullet to save the higher commanding officer. I also have many relatives who were veterans during each major war the US has been in--and my dad is dying of the injuries he sustained in the Cold War actions between Turkey and Crete in the middle sixties....

Coming from a family where almost every single male is a veteran, I always remember what Memorial Day is about.

I'm glad you posted this. So many people confuse Veteran's and Memorial days.

As you point out Memorial day is to honor those who gave their lives in battle.

We should honor our currently serving military personnel by thanking them whenever we see them. Veteran's Day on Nov 11th is when we honor our neighbors who have served but thankfully did not have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Thank you to all those in uniform today.

Thank you to all those who have served.

With great gratitude we honor those who gave their lives in battle for our freedom - it truly is the ultimate sacrifice.

As a suggestion - It would be nice if there was a special day to honor wounded veterans. Many have devastating life altering injuries that will be a challenge for the rest of their lives. There is a small effort around Labor Day where golf courses around the country honor the Wounded Warriors and collect donations to assist them. Even if you don't golf - that is a great way to give back to the Wounded Warriors.

I agree, a day for wounded vets would be great. These days, more veterans are returning home with "invisible" wounds that still need to be recognized. My brother in law came back from Afghanistan with a massive brain tumor from repeated head injuries and severe PTSD. Sadly, he doesn't receive much help for either condition and has actually been turned away from a hospital while he was have a suicidal episode from PTSD.

My fiance was killed in Afghanistan. Both sides of my family have served in different military branches.

I don't need one day to remember them or celebrate them or thank them...I feel that thanks is due year around.

good idea posting the meaning of each. I've been quite aware recently that no mention of the significance of this day has been mentioned by any of the media I have heard or watched.

Not so with the Oregonian newspaper, they have articles about local heroes who gave their lives in Afghanistan and in the Battle of Midway.

I know exactly what today is about; what I don't understand is - why do people turn today into another big Barbecue day?

The actual Memorial Day is on Wednesday--but since the Federal Government declared the holiday(s) would be officially 'celebrated' on Mondays to allow the Federal employees a paid holiday it became a 3-4 day weekend for many other businesses. Therefore it made it more of a family vacation, time off work, party day than it should ever have been. I personally celebrate the holiday on the actual date--not the government mandated Monday.....and since it is also the first day of summer--it is used as a tailgate party.
