How much do you spend on gifts?

How much do you spend on average for gifts for others? I read an article stating the average parent spends over $400 on each of their children. It also said spouses spend about $700 on each other. How about your family?

For my husband, alone, I spend no more than $500. We believe in gifts but we don't believe they should be ridiculously expensive unless it is people very very close like mothers, sisters, etc... However, he keeps surprising me with rings so I might buy him something a little more expensive this year since he spent a good 3,000 on me.

When it is my sisters and brothers or parents, I will spend less on sisters and brothers. My mother is really in charge of their gifts right now since they are young, I spend a max of $30 on each. But I make sure it's what they want really bad.

Parents I will spend more. I spend about $200 on each unless I find a steal. Same goes for parents in-law. However hubby and I split the price.

If it is a Christmas when there is something special that recently happened such as a marriage or graduation, or if someone had a loss and needs to be cheered up, we will spend more.

We have always spent way to much. In the last few years we have been getting better about not over spending. In the old days I normally spent between $1800 - $2500. My husband on the other hand would spend $2000 to $5000! He was at the upper end of that more then once! This year total for each other will be under $1200.

I don't have kids, I spend about $100 on my partner and maybe $20-$30 on close family and friends. I find cheap and creative ways to do things (lots of personal crafts, and buying art off of local artists). I'm not big on commercial spending and consumerism, so I usually limit my spending.

probably $400 all together, maybe less. I don't have a boyfriend or kids so it's just nieces, nephews and secret santas mostly.

It depends on the person and how much we have saved up that year. This year, we bought my mother-in-law a brand new iPod but we only bought my dad a video game. We do usually try and spend the same on everyone though, which is generally around $50-$60 a person.

As a newly married couple our budget is tight this year. We set our limit to buy for each other at $100. Parents and siblings - usually about $50 each. We did a Christmas cards this year with wedding pictures to each of our guests and with printing, postage, and cards it added up quick! Our secret Santa at work is 3 small $1 gifts and then 1 $5 gift at the end. Friends I spend around $20 on and about $10 on their kids. However, I do a lot of my shopping throughout the year (sales) so what I spend vs. what it is worth is different.

My partner and I don't exchange gifts. He's in another country, so shipping gifts is just too expensive. Plus, it's just more rewarding for us to put any gift money we would've spent towards trips to see one another.

As for family and friends, I tend to spend between $30-50 on each person.

I would say that my parents probably spend $200 on my sister and myself each. I usually spend about $20-40 per person regardless of who they are, except if I have a s.o. I tend to spend a bit extra on them.
