I have always heard that if you take down your Christmas tree before New Years day then you will have a year of bad luck. Within moments of taking down my tree Things started to happen. lol. 2 pans fell on my toe in the kitchen, My tire went flat on my car, the toilet over flowed. lol Maybe I am being silly but it left me wondering if the saying is actually true or if these are just co-incidents. So tell me what is you opinion??

Superstitions and beliefs have the power you give them - a self-fulfilling prophesy. "I took the tree down too early, now I'm going to have bad luck." And you start looking for it through that lens.

I've never heard of this...I've heard that black eyed peas on New Years Day will bring good luck though.

I agree with this. The mind can be a powerful thing when it comes to stuff like this.

That's a new one on me. I'm not superstitious at all, so no, I wouldn't believe it.
12/30/2010
I've never heard of that honestly. We actually took our tree down the day right after Christmas with no ill effects, so I think it's just a coincidence.
12/30/2010
I don't believe in luck but I keep my tree up until the Epiphany.
12/30/2010
I've never heard of this being bad luck. I just always keep my tree up until after New Year's out of habit.
12/30/2010
I've never heard of that either. We always leave the tree up til New Years or later anyways though.
12/30/2010
Even if it were true, I'm still safe. We have two trees. I took the bigger one down but the other one is still up
12/30/2010
I always keep mine up til the 1st of Jan. Not that I believe the whole bad luck thing it just seems like the time to take it down.

I'd never heard of this either. We take ours down on January 1 to start the new year, but it's something we've always done, not because it will bring bad luck.

That's what we're doing this year, and I think I like the idea. We were going to take it down yesterday, but the kids really wanted to keep it for a few more days, so now we're going to take it down on Saturday to start the year off

Where as I don't believe the luck part I've always heard this tale. I do keep our tree up as a tradition usually. One year we had a live tree and it started dying the day we bought it. Nothing I did helped it so by Christmas morning it was a fire hazard and that one came down the next morning. Don't remember bad luck from it but to leave it we would have had a fire. I just assume take ours down on new years so we can put away the old and start anew

We try to take ours down by St. Patrick's Day, or else people get sarcastic and put Easter eggs on it.
12/30/2010
I never heard that one before. The one my mother's side of the family says is that the first dinner we eat on the first of the New Year's can't have a meat that "scratches backward" or we'll start the year off backward. So, for instance, we can't eat chicken because that animal scratches backward.

Wow, I've never heard of that one! I believe in the one that warns that whatever you spend New Years Day doing, you'll do for the rest of the year. I try to work in all of my favorite activities on New Years Day for that reason, and I'm extra careful to make sure that any unpleasant chores get done early!

I'm a firm believer in quantum physics- which, in part, states that you attract the things that will happen to you. If you think negative thoughts, negative things will happen. So, no, I don't believe that it is truly bad luck to take your Christmas tree down before New Years- but if YOU believe it is, it can be. I don't know if that actually makes any sense or not.
My man and I actually took our Christmas tree yesterday and nothing bad has happened

If you believe that it is 'bad luck' then you will see ANYTHING negative happening as part of that experience. Problem is the tradition of putting a tree IN the house is a new one. The myth of bad luck is not rooted in any traditional belief structure it is just silliness.

We took our tree down last year just after Yule because we had a newborn and wouldn't have time to take it down around New Year because of Sigel's job. This year has been the unequaled BEST year we have EVER had. So don't worry about it, you are having a phase of what we 'professional' Witches call "rash of shit". It will pass and the year will shape up nicely. Maybe you are just getting the "wheel of fortune" turning right now, it will right itself in it's own time.
12/31/2010
I don't think so, but that doesn't mean my family takes the tree down right off the bat. It normally stays up until February.

I don't think it's bad luck, I just think it's shortcutting the season. I put a lot of work into the tree and enjoy my hard work until the first week of January. It's also not a live tree though so it's easier to do that.
01/11/2011
I've never heard of this superstition before. We leave our Christmas tree up until Jan. 6, because that's the day of the Three Wise Men in Italy.
