Are you reading the books or have you read them? What are your thoughts on them? Or are you itching to get your hands on them?
What do you think of Shades of Grey?

I'm mostly just curious about them

Curiousity got to me, I just ordered them.

I really don't care for it. It's based on a Twilight fan fic and while I used to love Twilight I just don't anymore and I can't get past it.

Yes! Itching to get my hands on them so I can rip them into tiny pieces and burn them....and the burn the ashes...Don't even get me started.

i'm not the target demographic at all, and i haven't read them, but the excerpts i've read have been horribly written and from what i've heard there's a lot of "abuse-dressed-up-as-B DSM". plus, you know, TWILIGHT FANFIC. i almost want to read them just to horrify myself, but i probably won't get round to it. there are too many actually good books to read.

I have not read the books yet, but I have a feeling that the reason why everyone in the BDSM community has gotten so annoyed with them is that vanilla people are reading them with them with the thought that they are how BDSM is, when it simply isn't the case. However, in my opinion, live and let live. If ignorant people who are vanilla want to think that way, then that's their business to do so. As long as they keep their nose out of my life, I'm fine keeping mine out of theirs.
And on that note, I hope that BDSM becomes more accepted.

I think that beyond the books being badly written--I've skimmed parts of the first one, the books paint a picture of people who are in the BDSM community as having their sexual experiences influenced by some damage in their past, which is generally not something that I find to be true. Also, the books completely neglect to discuss the need for aftercare following play. They're super problematic, and I think that it's frustrating that they're as popular as they are. I don't think that they'll make BDSM that much more accepted, simply because I think it perpetuates some damaging views that are already held about BDSM.

I read the first and second. I could barely finish the second. They're so poorly written and a terrible portrayal of the BDSM community. You can easily find better written erotica on EF or online for free.

I thought they were good. Something I could just read and not have to think too much about

I started the first one and got about halfway through it, which was a struggle in itself. I am frustrated that it has become so popular because it provides such an inaccurate account of a consensual BDSM relationship. Not to mention a lot of anti-feminist messages.
I am hoping however that because it has become a best seller that it will open the door for better written, accurate literature on the subject and that BDSM will not be as frowned upon by certain pockets of society.

I got .epub files of the trilogy and have it on my Nook to laugh at and assure myself that at least I don't write that bad. They're horrible books and I can't even fathom why a fanfiction turned original characters book got so huge.

Try reading them aloud to friends. Its the most hilarious shit out there. Make it a game to see who can go on the longest without cracking up in the middle of their reading.
