I've never read a whole story, but I'm familiar with the storylines. He's definitely a dated character, so a modern rehash is apropos. So far, the best Holmes I've seen is Hugh Lorie's "House". Yes, it is based on Sherlock Holmes. Remember when House got shot at the end of season 2(?), the guy who shot him was named "Moriarty".

I'd love to see Downy's Holmes, but I don't see how the stories are that action adventure.

There is a modern rehash. The BBC series 'Sherlock'. I would recommend it. I usually don't like old stories being retold in a modern era, but this one is so good that it overcame my dislike.

I've read all the books and love Sherlock Holmes. Haven't seen the new ones though.
