It is a beast of a computer. I love it. My first HP had an overheating problem, and would just shutdown on me.
I'm thinking of getting an apple computer for school.
My boyfriend has an Asus laptop! We spent well over 1,000 on his, because it's built for gaming.
I have the same pavilion Laptop except it has an icore processor and a 500GB hard drives. My desktop is an HP also with a quad core, 4 Gigs of ram, 2 500GB hard drives, 240 nvidia graphics card, etc.
No, I bought a Dell XPS with some parts I wanted (because it was a good deal), and lower-end versions of other parts (like the video/sound cards) to save money. Then I replaced the low-end parts and added an extra hard drive, etc.

Ahhhh.. I seee! That seems like it would take a lot of time. Did it?
Not really. I planned ahead and bought the separate parts ahead of time, so when I got the computer from Dell, I just took it apart and it was ready the same afternoon.
An old Compaq Evo N600c that actually belongs to my father (my Dell fell apart after only a year of use, and it was only a year old when I got it). I miss my Linux, though (the Compaq Thing has WindowsXP).
Both of our computers are a bit older. Both are Macs. I have a Mac Mini (a nice little first Mac for $599, but you'll have to provide your own monitor, keyboard, and mouse). I also use my husband's Macbook. I used to have an iBook G4, but I finally had to retire it after a good five years of heavy use.
I'd suggest either. Desktops have more power, but laptops can be ported around. Laptops are also much more expensive for the amount of computing power you get just because of the portability. If you know you want to move it around, go with a laptop, but I found that I usually sat in the same area ANYWAY, so it really wasn't worth the high price.
I've had two Sony Vaio laptops and now I have an HP desktop with an LG monitor. The boyfrend has an Apple laptop. He has a lot of problems with it. If you have the extra money or are really in love with the features of the Apple laptop, I'd say get it, but don't really expect it to last much longer than its Windows counterparts (depending upon the brand.).
Both of my Vaio computers, despite being 5 years and 1 year old, still work wonderfully, and I'd recommend a Sony Vaio computer over anything else.
I bought my Apple laptop for school back in 2006. At the time many companies were still adapting to the Apple computers, so some websites did not work as well, but in 2011, you will rarely come across a website that cannot cater to a MAC.
Apple, like many other companies like HP, has great deals for students. I was able to obtain a free printer and a free 2gb iPod with my purchase of the laptop. I highly recommend that you get the extended warranty when you buy your laptop.
Also, make sure you take care of your laptop battery. If you plan on leaving your laptop plugged in the wall most of the time, then take out the battery, otherwise your battery will prematurely loose its power.
Another tip, make sure you have an external hard drive to back up all your files. At the very least, get a USB that has ample memory so that you can save important files. Laptop hard drives can easily be damaged/corrupted, so back up any important/sentimental files. I learned the hard way.
I really really dislike laptops. Always have. Ive never not had a computer in my life and im 24. I learned how to use DOS before I started school as a kid. My high school computer class teacher passed me on the first day of class when we were doing our computer general knowledge test. I spent the rest of the year doing whatever I wanted. I know computers.
That being said I also own an ipad. I won it in a sweepstakes. I use it a lot more than my computer at this point. I like being able to read on it and look stuff up at the same time. Im not an apple person, you know those really hardcore people. But I do enjoy my ipad a lot.

15" i7 MacBook Pro, 27" iMac, 13" Dell XPS and a 17" Asus but that's pretty much a paperweight after only a year.
I'm jealous! I want a apple computer! Its just I hear crap about them. How not all programs work with them. How if the computer messes up you have to send it away, you cant just take it to like a computer shop. I had a friend who had a Macbook and onday the fan started making this noise. It cost her 300 to fix the damn fan! I was like Oh hell no! I just love the webcam on the apple computers.

Nessa,
Not everything you hear is true. My work stopped buying "regular" pc's cause we had so many problems with every brand. We only buy Apple computers now, even to run Windows. It's one of the best business decisions we made.
And, no, you don't have to send in a mac, you can bring it to a plethora of places to get it fixed. Especially since we both live in MN, I know there is a ton of places you can go.

I have an HP Pavilion. I love mine and it does overheat as well. I destroyed my dell just from daily use, but this one seems to hold up.
