When watching something in another language do you prefer subtitles or dubs?

Contributor: namelesschaos namelesschaos
So my question to you is when you are watching a movie or TV show that was filmed in another language do you prefer subtitles or dubs?

I tend to prefer subtitles in live action but dubs for animated stuff.

I prefer dubs its much easier to understand and I dont have to watch the subs so much so I can actually pay more attention to the show.

Definitely subtitles. I think dubs ruin the original quality of the show or film.

It depends. I don't mind subtitles for films, but I find them distracting for anime.

As much as I hate subtitles, I think that dubbing it ruins the integrity of the film.

Even though it is a bit of a hassle, I would prefer to read subtitles. I don't like the way dubbed movies sound.

It depends. I've seen some anime with good dubs, and that can be just as good as subtitles if done well. Most of the time, though, subtitles are better so you get it the way it was supposed to sound.

Subtitles for sure.

Subtitles. PIcture any kung fu movie that is dubbed and you'll know why. I would much rather read the subtitles than have words not match the mouth movements or body gestures of the actors.

I prefer subtitles. What is a dub anyway?

I cannot BEAR dubbing. Reading subtitles only distracts me slightly, and it's well worth it.

The subtitles are more accurate. Also I can't stand it when a voice doesn't match the character. Dubbing can make it silly.

I prefer dubs on the movies/shows that I watch. I have watched the subtitle versions too, but I felt like if I didn't keep my eyes on the screen, I'd miss something.

Definitely subtitles! Dubs are usually done badly.

Usually subs, unless it is an anime I've seen before and am in the mood to really relax and not read.

I don't mind either way. If the dubbing is good, and doesn't take away too much from the original dialog, then I'll usually just watch the dubbed version.

Subtitles. It increases the intensity of the movie and dubs usually don't do over well.

I'm with you there. Cowboy Bebop was a great dub, but I still prefer to watch it with subtitles. Is it just me or have dubs been getting worse and worse with time? I am regularly astounded at the ability of certain VO artists to get work.

Not a fan of dubs. They are usually so poorly done I find them distracting.

When I lived in Germany, I saw an Arnold Schwarzenegger film that I'd previously seen in the US. I was shocked to hear someone else's voice dubbed for Schwarzenegger's. I would have thought that since he's a native German speaker that he would have done the dub for himself. I was quite disappointed.

Dubs can be weird, and I only watch movies in subtitle if I am really going to pay attention, if not then I don't even bother.

I watch an anime called One Piece (best anime ever btw) and I started watching it in Japanese with English subtitles. I got pretty far into the series (I would say maybe in the early 100ish episodes) and decided to watch the English dubbed version. I HATED IT!!! The voices sounded so wrong for the characters. So now I am turned off to anything that is in Japanese originally then dubbed in English. I don't know, it just doesn't sound right.

subtitles. If its dub it drives me nuts to hear the dialogue and the mouths not match and it can detour me from the movie. When I was senior in high school we were forced to watch movies without dubs or subtitles. Our french teacher thought that after 4yrs we should know a good portion of the language.

There have been some great foreign films Ive seen and I dont even realize im reading subtitles. It seems like english in my brain when they speak, but sometimes if its boring or im not paying attention I like it dubbed. Its all about how much you pay attention. Also I agree with other about not liking the mouths not matching the words with dubbed, but thats again an attention thing.

Amen. I want to experience the original acting and directing. A dubbed version is like an imitation of the true film.
