5 bits of advice that don't make sense until it's too late

Contributor: Jul!a Jul!a
"A lot of what grownups say is bullshit. You figure this out in your teens, and wind up just tuning it all out. By 15 I got to where every time I was offered advice, I just nodded in mock agreement and then laughed at them behind their back. "Can you believe that pompous douchebag tried to tell me that? Christ, I'm not 14 anymore!"

So it winds up taking years to filter out the bad advice ("Son, don't ever loan your car to a negro") from the good ("That Def Leppard tattoo isn't gonna be relevant five years from now, John.") I think I heard all of the below at some point, but it would be five or ten (or more) years before I'd realize it belonged in the good advice pile."

This article is definitely worth a read. Not all of it will apply to everybody, but it's still knowledge worth having.

I wish someone would've told me I didn't have to go to college right after high school.

A year or two as an adult on your own is a LOT more educational than two semesters worth of 100/200 level classes.

Perhaps the weightiest Cracked article I've ever read, but I really appreciated that. Thanks, Sam.

Thankfully my parents told me that, I still haven't gone to college, don't want to waste the money when I don't know what I want to be when I grow up

It didn't take me long to figure out that everyone in my life who could be considered a success in their own right had never gone to college. I wasn't upset to learn that the money for a college degree wasn't in my immediate future. Now, I'm really glad that I'm not one of the many people saddled with student loans and interest payments I can't afford.

Great article. Definitely a heavy-hitter, but hey a good dose of reality never hurt anyone.

It was a great article, I loved that they hit on depression and seeing someone for help doesn't make you a freak and you are not alone, millions of people are doing it as well. I have struggled with depression since my early puberty, been a cutter, numerous suicide attempts and PPD after having my son. I am finally comfortable asking for help the second those feelings come up.

I love Cracked. A lot of it is funny, but they manage to slip in some really good advice, too.
