5 Second Rule

Contributor: Rossie Rossie
I'll throw away any food that's been dropped on the ground, even if the floor has just been mopped, because my dog walks all over the place. Prescription pills are the only thing I'll pick up from the floor, wipe clean and consume.

It depends on the food, if its something that can be rinsed off or has a outside of some sort sure. But other foods, no way.

if it is something raw that I am going to cook, then I will wash it off. But if it is ready to be eaten, then it goes in the trash.

I have learned with the 5 second rule that you can't use it with children. i tried it once and no matter where something falls they want to pick it up and eat it.

It depends, of course. I'll try to err on the side of not picking it up, but sometimes I don't see the harm.

Not if you taught them at an early age.

It's "how clean the floor is" yes, but ONLY in my own home, where I KNOW what has been on that spot of floor. For instance, where I would...the floor could look like it was brand new, and there is no way on earth...and not enough cash in Fort Knox to get me to pop a piece of candy from that floor into my mouth. NO way on earth.

Don't eat it. The 5 seconds make no difference, since the bacteria are transferred instantly with the contact.

If it's washable food, though, you can wash and then eat.

For most foods no their are a few acceptation, like say if an orange lands peel side on the floor I'd might eat it, but for the most part no.

If I drop something at my house or my parents house, I might pick it up and eat it. Anywhere else, it can stay on the floor.

It depends on what I dropped and where it landed...also, how fast the dog is to it usually plays a role in if I get to decide to eat it or not!

I just can't do it. In the trash it goes. We have a dog and a cat. No matter how much I sweep and mop there is always hair floating around. Now my boys, they push the 5 seconds to 8 or 9! hahaha
