Honestly? If I saw someone nearby I might ask them if it was theirs, but otherwise I'd keep it.

If there was any chance I knew who it belonged to, or saw someone drop it, I would sure return it. If not, taking it somewhere, and turning it over to someone? It would just go in THEIR pocket. If it were jewelry or a wallet, YES, I would take it into a nearby store or business, but just a single cash bill? Nope...again, unless I had some reasonable chance of it getting to it's owner.

If there was no one around it, the likelihood of it returning to the proper owner is very slim. In that case, I would just keep it. If I saw someone nearby, I'd ask them if they dropped any money (and not tell them how much). If they could say, "Oh, yeah. I dropped a $20", I'd give it to them but otherwise, probably not. If you ask someone if they dropped a specific amount without asking them to say how much, it's likely that they're lying and just want money. I've returned smaller amounts before and I know that they just went into the pocket of whoever I gave it to so never again.

If I saw someone drop it, I would return it, but if it was just sitting there I would keep it. There's no way to really tell ownership of a bill, unlike a wallet or credit card. Asking people if they lost $20 won't work, they will just say yes. Asking if they misplaced some money and making them tell you how much is a little less risky, but you could just get a good guesser. If someone came up to me looking for it, I would give it back, though.

If there was someone standing right next to me I'd probably ask but other than that I would totally keep it! It's only $20 and I'm sure anyone would lie and say, "oh yeah that's mine" when it really wasn't. If it was $2,000 then that would be totally different. I wouldn't keep it I would definitely get someone to help me.

I would ask around, and if no one took it, I would give it to the first Mom I saw.

If I saw someone drop it I would give it back other wise there is no way to tell who it belonged to and the person you turned it into would just pocket it.

Once many years ago I was driving with my spouse and young son in town and I spotted what looked like a dollar bill on the road. There weren't any other cars on the road so I stopped and sure enough that's what it was then i saw another bill and another. When I added it up it was over fifty bucks. Sadly my spouse demanded half... LOL!

I have also pointed out (several times over the years) dropped cash to the person who dropped it, who was in line ahead of me at a fast food joint.

Yep, though I could hardly resist, but what if the person is nearby, then it's obvious to give it back to her/him...

I have found money on the ground before. I looked around, asked a few folks if they dropped it, no? Ok cool...I got mollah again! lol.

God knows I have dropped money before and never had it returned. Frustrating, but my own fault for not payin attention

In all it depends. If they were close or I saw someone drop it then I would give it to them.

If it was loose cash, and I didn't see anyone around, yes I would keep it. If it was in a wallet, no - and I would try to return the wallet to its owner. It really sucks losing things.

If no one was around, and I didn't see it fall out of someones purse or something then I would keep it. If it's a $20 dollar bill anyone you ask will probably say it's theirs because there's no way to prove it and it's free cash. So i'd just keep it at that point.

If someone came running into the parking lot asking if anyone saw a $20 they just dropped, I would give it to them.

Usually I would look around for someone who looks like they would have dropped it, but if it's a massive public place like a garage I would probably just take it if I couldn't see anyone obviously looking for it.

Never saw money bills on the ground, but if I did come across one, I would take it to the customer service at the nearest store, that's what I always do in similar situations; one time it was a credit card, another incidence was someone left her handbag in a shopping cart at the cart return (quite unbelievable!).

I work at a grocery store. If you turn it in at the desk, they just put it in the register. Nobody ever gets their money back.

Unless I saw someone drop it or there's someone around who could have dropped it (someone fishing in their pockets or bag, whatever), I just keep it.

As a rule, I don't work too hard to return $20. Bills bigger than that, though, I'll put in more effort and ask around ("Did you drop some cash?" and then wait for them to tell me how much).
