Antibacterial Soap/Triclosan

Contributor: mmike mmike
A while ago, I've read that antibacterial soap is not better than regular soap. Cool, but a month ago I still decided to buy two big jugs of antibacterial soap because they were cheap. I wash my hands pretty damn often. I also wash my toys before and after use.

Now I've recently read that the antibacterial stuff, which contain triclosan, can harm the environment and the human immune system, if overused.

First, how much is overuse? Second, what the hell am I suppose to do with all that soap?

I plan on never buying anymore of that crap, but should I just suck it up and finish using that antibacterial soap or drop it off at the Household Hazardous Waste?

That's an in-depth article about it. Sometimes you have to take certain things like this with a grain of salt. Unless what you read came from a reputable source like this, they may be playing up the dangers of it.

If you have a bunch of soap like this that you don't want to use, you could donate it to a school.

My AP Bio teacher, ten years ago, used to talk about the dangers of overusing antibacterial soaps. She told us that since they're always something like "99.9%" effective, that .1% that is surviving is the most dangerous bacteria and those are the ones that are reproducing and thriving. I'm not sure of the link between that and triclosan but you are doing potential future dammage to yourself when the strongest, most resistant things are becoming the most plentiful.

I think a lot of articles just use scare tactics! The media is always trying to get the public worked up over something - which really pisses me off.

I have been using only anti-bacterial soap for about 5 years now and I wash my hands regularly cause I have a germ thing going on.
Personally I don't care what people try to scare me with over using such soaps.

If it's suppose to break down ya immune system, it's really weird why I have a much stronger one than everyone else around me.
I haven't gotten sick at all in a number of years - no colds, viruses, flues! So I'm going to continue using my anti-bacterial soap, wipes and hand gel.
