I'm in the Northwest -- far away from the latest Arctic blast.

It's currently -18 here (with windchill, somewhere in the neighborhood of -40). I'm staying warm with lots of layers when I go outside-- long underwear, wool socks, turtleneck under a short-sleeve sweater, jacket, gloves, boots, "180" ear warmers, scarf, etc. Mostly I'm just staying in, though! My work was cancelled for the day so I really lucked out.

75 and sunny- sheer evil!!

It's nice to get off work at least! I work indoors, so as long as my car starts, I'm good to go with my short commute. The dog's not appreciative of doing her business in the cold, though! She's taken to doing a 15 second squat directly outside the back door. Poor thing!

Does she have an insulated fleece vest and warm booties?

She does! She hates wearing the booties, but I worry about sending her out with just the "paw wax" that was fine on its own at the start of the season.

Booties are way better than just the paw wax -- does she do the funny dance when you put the booties on her? What breed is she?

My local weather says it's currently 3°. By Saturday it will be 55. It's crazy around here.

HA! Yes, she does do a wonky dance! She's a whippet/jack russell mix- lots of speed, a little nervous around new people, loves being chased at the dog park, and calm and snuggly at night. What type of dog(s) do you have?

ATL, GA was colder than Anchorage, Alaska yesterday. It was -20 with the windchill factored in but it's in the low 20's now.

Used to live there too. Yup, best weather on earth, and no bugs! Of course, that is why the same house that goes for about $50,000 anywhere else in the USA, sells for $7,965,235 in San Diego, right?

I know, huh? I'm in the northern area of the sunny central valley in CA. temps reach mid 60's every day.

A designer dog? That's so cute, and she must have inherited the best of both breeds! Mine's a black Standard Poodle.

That's quite balmy...compared to -20. Hope it will warm up more by the end of the week for everybody.

Well yesterday here the actual temp was -21 F, without windchill.

Only plus side: no work for the past two days!
Back to work tomorrow. It will still be in the negative teens when I start my car up for work, so I'm crossing my fingers it will be fine.

Oh it was insane and everyone around here lost their freakin' minds over it. However, I do have to say that if you remember the blizzard of '93, it's not quite so hard to panic when you hear weather like this is approaching the metro area. People can't drive in the sunshine, or the rain, let alone snow and ice!

It's winter, so yeah it's cold. LOL. I guess cold weather doesn't surprise me I was born in Winnipeg Manitoba. I'm in Edmonton Alberta now and -40C is not really normal that's for sure! eesh I don't like the cold and we've had over a whole winters worth of snow already.

I LOVE standards- such great personalities. I used to think I wanted a husky but they're too standoffish for me. Jessie (dog) is a rescue dog, actually, not a designer dog. She's got the best of both, though this is coming from a biased source.

On the topic of the polar vortex-- SO glad that it's headed into the teens towards the end of this week (at least in MN)! Hope things are getting warmer where all of you are!

If you can find a home anywhere in the US that's worth living in for $50k - go for it! The median single family home in SD is about $425k - but we don't spend $400 a month heating and air conditioning.

There is indeed a sunshine penalty - in the long run it's worth it.
