I have no problem with welfare for those that need it.

No, I don't mind when people use it to get back on their feet in a few months...as long as there is a legitimate need.

It is not a bad thing to be on but you do need to find a way to be on your own. As for people who never work then it is bad and should not be used that way.

No but I have had to use it in the past.

Nope, but I'm glad it's available for people who have negative circumstances. That said, I'd love if it went away because nobody needed it

Been there twice, both times I had to find a new job and it did not pay enough. Just getting food stamps helped so much to be able to pay other bills so we did not get behind. Times are tough and jobs are few, especially ones that pay half way good.

I've been on food stamps before, but never Welfare. (Oh, maybe food stamps ARE Welfare, shows what I know! lol) I think it's a great program for people who find themselves in a tough spot, and if you qualify there's no reason to be ashamed or embarrassed. I don't think it should become someone's sole source of lifetime income though.

I don't really know how it works (obviously), but it seems like it would be nice if they also had some sort of job placement program for those who can work and are having a hard time finding employment.

My husband and I are on disability so we get some help with rent. I hate being on assistance because you can never get ahead. If you have any savings or stocks/ bonds, C.D.'s, or property or too good of a car they hold it against you. We can't have any money put a side for emergencies so when something comes up we are screwed. My husband helps his mother out so she will help when we need it. I only except it if she lets me pay her back. Medical bills, prescriptions, Vet bills, Gas for the car, things like that pop up and what are we suppose to do? I refuse to get credit cards because I know the trouble those little bad boys can cause. It seems like a never ending cycle of B.S. when it comes to welfare.

No, because we don't have kids, but we do receive food stamps and I am desperately trying to get disability, because I've had a lot of issues for years and they are slowly getting worse to the point where I can't meet physical requirements of work, which could even include answering phones or sitting for more than 10 minutes at a time in an uncomfortable position.

Yes, but it's only medical insurance. We were receiving food and medical while hubby was unemployed. Once he found a new job; they sent a letter saying they would cover the family for one year. In Nov. we will no longer be on it. My hubby makes far too much money to qualify. They only gave us that year because they know it takes time to get your own insurance at work. And we have two small children, so they want to make sure their taken care of.

Just because you work doesn't mean you can't be on welfare. Many people work and are still on it because they don't make enough money to cover expenses. If you only work at Mc Donalds making minimum wage less than 40 hours a week, so they don't have to give you insurance; then you don't have a choice but to sign up because your children need insurance and food.

I'm not, but as a social worker I help clients navigate the system to get on things like TANF, Food Stamps, and Medicaid. I agree with Beck that a lot of people in poverty get jobs making minimum wage and cannot pay the bills or afford insurance. I don't think it is a system to be abused, but from my experience I can say that it's very hard to even get on welfare sometimes. Being on welfare is not as "easy" as we think; it requires a lot of paperwork and time spent waiting at an office to see a worker who may or may not be rude to you. Also once you start working they will cut your benefits so sometimes it actually makes things worse for my clients to go to work.

No, but I was about 25 years ago after being injured on the job. It was a godsend at the time and I am glad it is available.

My husband works part time at a lower paying job. I stay at home with my three children and have a lot of physical issues, so I can't work. We receive food stamps and health insurance. My husband works really hard!! It's a lot harder to get a job where we are than a lot of areas. Just because we get some help doesn't mean no one is working. We do what we can with what we have to deal with and are grateful to have some help with things. It's hard to feel five mouths and heathcare is very expensive!

We are not on welfare but we do get arkids first medical care for our children from the state, when I was pregnant with both kids I received wic, and we were able to get reduced lunches at school last year for my preschooler.

I've been fortunate enough to never need it and have never been on it.

There are times in some people's lives where it is public aid, or starvation and poor health and deep depression. I wouldn't want anyone to go without food or basic necessities, ever. A Public Aid system is the sign of a morally developed society.

I'm on it and it has really helped to up and out of some really bad situations. I hate though when people abuse and never work towards something better. I've been able to go to school and now I'm going back a second time to be certified in Medical billing and coding! I know I'm not going to be on it forever just about another year and I'll be on my own and I want it that way, I don't like being on it but it does help especially for people that really need it!

While I have qualified in the past, I never really needed it though. Times get tight, but I know there are a lot of families out there that can use it a little more than I can

I have never been on it. When I was a young kid, my family should have been on it. But my mom didn't want it.
