How bad does breaking a bone hurt?

I broke my little toe & it hurt really bad, but wasn't in the same ballpark as a kidney stone. When I had a kidney stone, the pain was so awful I couldn't even think rationally--I was in the hospital room rooting around for things to slice my wrist with because I literally wanted to die from the pain, & I wasn't able to comprehend that it was going to end. They had to come in & give me meds to knock me out because I kept screaming so loud. I didn't know that it was possible to be in that much pain. The little toe breaking hurt a lot worse than I thought it would, but I was still able to stop & think "okay, this isn't permanent, it'll feel better in a few days, I need to take some pain medicine & go to sleep."

I broke my toe. Hurt just as much as stubbing it at first, but it didn't go away. Was still throbbing hours later and it hurt to walk for a long time.

I have broken my wrist and honestly I do not remember. It was like I blacked out...I don't remember how it felt at all.

For me it was about an 8. I've broken two of my fingers and both of my wrists, all at different times. The pain varies, but it also depends how bad you break the bone. One of my breaks was merely just a fracture, but the others were more serious and were about an eight on the pain scale.

I selected five, but quite frankly, it entirely depends on the bone, the kind of break, the circumstances surrounding the break and if any other damage is done aside from the break (torn ligaments, dislocation, the jagged end of a bone piercing the skin, etc).

On top of that, everyone's scale is subjective, of course - rating something like pain is one of the major problems in the world of psychology.

I hope I never find out. I sprained an ankle badly in August and I am still recovering and get pain from time to time. They said I would have been better off breaking my foot than spraining it. I've done it before, but this one was 10x worse and was on crutches for at least a month. Sucked. Did I mention I was on vacation ?
