(I have also used a local provider which later was bought up by AT&T which had reasonable customer service. I moved and got a new number with Verizon, who had miserable service and caused me to end my contract early. Whatever you do, don't choose Verizon.)
T-Mobile is definitely the best bet if you have signal with them. They also have pretty good signal-sharing in places where they don't have their own towers, *except* in the state I've been living in for the last two years (apparently there was some kind of anti-trust non-monopoly lawsuit and they're not allowed to share here.) Even with poor signal indoors, though, I've still happily stuck with them because their customer service is so good. And in the other two states I spend large amounts of time in, I have either perfect signal, or better signal than most people.
I've never heard of Cellcom!
There are cheaper options available, but I'm not sure if coverage, minutes, etc. suffer with the cheaper prices or not.
When we switched, I got a Palm Pre (an original) and I really liked the Palm phones, when it came time to upgrade, the Pre2 had just come out, but Sprint decided to NOT carry it! So, I stayed with my original phone until last year, a few weeks before Christmas. I had a minor graphics flaw that they fixed in store, but in doing so, destroyed the earpiece! The replacement that was sent (a factory refurb) had the touch screen not working and the replacement for that one had a non-working keyboard. A fourth (or fifth, I forget at this point) had about half the keyboard sticking and not working a portion of the time, but it got me through Christmas.
We went in February (January was a busy time for us) and I upgraded to a Windows phone. I like the HTC Arrive, but it is a lot bulkier than other company's versions of Windows phones...if I had waited another month, I could have gotten an Android that is much thinner!
They are more expensive but with the feature of free calling to other Verizon customers it works out as Verizon seems to be the dominant player.

At work, most people on my team have android phones. We're working on developing android apps and when we're together trying out different apps and sites on our phones, pages fly in for people with Verizon. Sprint is fast, but not quite as fast as Verizon and me, with my sucky ATT service, sometimes can't even load the page.
