Do you FISH?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
Interesting news report I just heard. Despite an increase in people saying they enjoy "outdoor" activity (after a decade of glued to TV/COMPUTER lack of growth in outdoor folk), the amount of MONEY and the amount of HARDWARE for fishermen (and fisherwoman?) has gone UP....BUT...the number of people who say they fish, or enjoy it, in a poll, shows the numbers have gone DOWN. WAY down, in fact, from years gone by.

SO...it seems, if the poll is correct, that those who fish are buying lots of expensive boats, rods/reels, gear...etc, but their numbers are dwindling. I wonder if it is a PETA type of "animal rights" concern, or more of a "don't want to go play outside" resurgence?

Do you fish? Do you notice less people doing it? Do you hate fish? Why?

What is your thought on this report? I didn't unfortunately, catch who DID the poll. It was a report on the radio.

I fish, on occasion, but I have to be honest, the reason I don't do it more often is because if I want to be outdoors, I want to be moving, and fishing isn't very conductive to physical activity. It's far too much sitting and waiting for me, most days.

I love fishing. I am getting my license later in the year due to finances, still have my same old reel and tackle and sold the boat so I am now sittin' on the bank, but yes, I still fish. Oh, am grabbing my own worms now as well, flood the back yard and wait for those slimy little suckers to surface. Damn, I grow some nice nightcrawlers!

We go quite often, weather permitting of course. If I am with the kids we just use a sliding bobber and a small jig with a piece of worm on it. Most of the time I don't even take my poll out of the truck, the kids catch fish left and right so I just bounce back and forth taking off fish and helping them re-bait. When I go by myself, I fly fish. This keeps me moving and allows me to enjoy more of the river.

We get our worms the same way. Try putting a piece of white bread out after watering, they attract to it like mad. I thank Dirty Jobs for that little tip.

I'm odd. I am a member of PETA and an animal rights activist but only to a certain extent. If an animal is suffering, I am against it.

I fish and I hunt. I am accurate when hunting of course, so not suffering there and when I fish I kill the fish and put it in the freezer on our boat. The boat we have primarily for fishing isn't all that expensive, not as much as the other few. But it was in the $3,000 range. The most expensive thing used for fishing other than the boat is our GPS which was a gift. The rods aren't fancy, just basic rods. My dad was an electrician before retiring so he wired the boat and put a generator on it that runs without vibrations so we can hook a freezer up and whatever else we feel like. This allows us to put the fish in the freezer to preserve

And, of course, I don't worry about this much because we eat what we catch and kill!

No, I don't like fishing. I don't have the patience, and I also do not want to smell fishy, and get messy touching the fishes.

I'm going to venture a guess and say that it has nothing to do with people not wanting to go outside and play, but more like all of our rivers and lakes are either polluted or so far below full-pool that fishing is dangerous or worse---inconsequentia l, at best. That means more deep sea/coastal fishing and that requires heavier, more expensive gear.

I love to go fishing, but I haven't been in many, many years because the lakes aren't full and the river is so polluted you can't eat what you catch.

I love to fish, but unless you know someone with a stocked pond- I wouldn't trust eating what I caught. Fishing in a stocked pond sorta takes the skill and sportsmanship out of the picture, so it's not as fun to me. Never been deep sea fishing, but I'll bet it's fun!
