Do you have a garden?

Contributor: Rokmai Rokmai
As we have just past the danger of frost here, I was wondering how many of you garden.

This year I have dug up most of my yard and filled a fair portion of my porch/windowsills with pots and barrels. And so I have quite a few things to take care of now:

Asian pear tree
Asparagus
Brussel sprouts
Chives
Corn
Jalapenos
Garlic
Raspberries
Sakata melons
Spinach
Strawberries
Sunflowers
Watermelons

Plus, dwarf lemon and pomegranate trees. Just because.

I love to garden, but we won't be past frost danger for quite a while. We've got a lot of perennial flowers and fruits which should make it through, and then I'll be planting a lot of fruits and vegetables.

I'm still leaching off of all of the flowers and decorative plants the previous owners put in. I am very thankful they seem to take care of themselves.

Oh goodness, don't get me started talking about gardening, I will never shut up! PASSIONATE organic gardener & seed saver! I'm in a new home that I plan to never leave, except feet first! I have to establish everything from scratch - exciting, yet daunting, too! I've had some health issues that have prevented me from getting started outside & I feel hopelessly behind, already! I need to plant all the fruit bushes I potted up from my last place, start the raised beds, get all the seedlings in... Oh well, I have the rest of my life to work on it, I enjoy it & eating the results, so, as much as I stress or bitch about it, I love it! (Sort of the same thing with family, the bitching has love behind it.)

I just barely started my garden. I have cactus plants, mint, chiles and cane. I'm trying to grow potatoes, avocados, strawberries and sweet potatoes but they have not grown T_T

We only have a flower garden consisting of Tulips, Hostas, English and French Lavenders, Dogwood, and Red Bud. I'd love to grow some citrus and figs, but the Northwest climate isn't really suitable for those types of fruit trees.

I can't really do berries anymore. Between the squirrels and the birds, I'm surprised even the leaves survive.

Everything is covered in chicken wire this year. They should be very thankful poaching/using firearms in the suburbs is still illegal.

As of this moment, I have only gotten my flower bed in front of my house done. We will have both food and flower gardens when I am done with all the work.

wow, that's quite a garden you've got going. I have a potted garden consisting of mostly flowers. I have a little bit of greenery growing too. I've had large gardens in the past. they are a lot of work but I find it fun work. I enjoy the results too.

I used to have one when I lived at home, but I don't right now. When I get my own house, I definitely want a fruit and veggies garden. Not so much flowers.

Does a mini herb garden count? Lol. I have a small herb garden and 4 aloe plants. My herb garden contains (or is SUPPOSED TO CONTAIN, only I think they aren't coming up!) oregano, basil, sweet basil, cilantro, parsley and 3 others but I forgot. Lol. I was growing them for the herbs' health benefits, just as I do aloe -- I eat my aloe plants. I have eaten nearly all of my plants and just prepared the last mature 3 stalks left today. Well, actually my lovie did that for me. I've been having stomach issues again & he'll get to work getting them all prepared up for me.

Garlic is one I'm about to plant! I was going to do that today, but got busy. I eat a clove a day if I remember -- also for the health benefits & to help with my stomach. And since it's good for almost everything, I figured I'd try to grow my own and not have to grab some at the store all the time. They're super cheap, but I really like having what I need on hand at all times in case of a flare up.

Spinach would be something I'd like to grow! Is it easy? I need easy. Lol. I would love to do a nice garden, but really shouldn't try going any bigger than my little container of herbs and the aloe pots because I might not always have the time to keep up. If it doesn't take a whole lot of up-keep -- sunshine, water every once in a while, I can handle it.

I bet the dwarf lemon is awesome & pomegranate trees! Ooooh! I'd love to grow me some of those! My lovie is supposed to bring me a spearmint plant tomorrow, but it's small so I can deal with it probably.

Man! Now you have me wanting to grow everything. Lol. Sounds like you gotta great garden.

I don't but have thought about it every year. We have the acreage, awesome dirt and plenty of water. I don't have the time or drive to keep it weeded or tended properly. I do have very healthy green grass and many trees and other decorative plants around the yard, though!!! (Anyone want any Aspens?? Mine keeps having a million babies every time I turn around.)

I was looking to buy an aloe plant last night. I hear they're great to have indoors. I also was thinking of spearmint to have inside, hoping it could keep my kitchen nice and minty. Maybe the scent is not that strong, though.

This is the first year I've grown garlic, though. I hear you can trim back some of the plant leaves to make the bulb bigger, but we'll see. First year for spinach, too. I'm planting 10 in the bins outside my backdoor. Maybe that will help keep the rabbits away.

I forgot that I also have pineapple that I planted last summer from the crown of one from the supermarket. Started from 6 inches, now it's almost 5 feet. I water it maybe once a month. What a perfect plant.

I have flower and vegetable gardens. I have so many now that I have a hard time keeping up with them. I think I'm going to skip having a vegetable garden this year and just buy local as I've had trouble with blight and deer in the past. Tending a garden all summer to lose the fruits of your labor to disease or pests is very frustrating. The deer like to eat some of the flowers too, so I'm trying to just grow the ones they don't like!

Wow, sounds great! I wish I had room for a garden, but unfortunately not where I'm currently living. Perhaps someday though.

Unfortunately where we live doesn't allow us enough space to grow much of anything beyond a few flowers. We would love to homestead though and grow as much of our own food as possible, some day we'll get there.

I would love to, but we live in the city. Someday... someday...

I have though about doing some indoor gardening and building some window boxes. It won't be the quite the same, but it still could be fun.
