Do you hire friends?

Contributor: TJtheMadHatter TJtheMadHatter
My motto is don't hire friends. I grew up watching my parents making that mistake and kicking themselves. There are a few friends that I will do favors for, and them do favors for me. I don't like actually hiring friends. It always seems to get sticky. My husband made the mistake of hiring his buddy to do our landscaping. He was a greens keeper for years and just started his own business. For the past couple of months, I've noticed that my lawn looks terrible (granted it's mowed), my flower beds are over grown with weeds, the front of our house has weeds everywhere, the list goes on. My husband doesn't want to talk to his buddy about it because "he's going through hard times". He's even lending his buddy his truck to keep his business going while his truck is in the shop, again. The buddy says he's not going to charge us this month ($50). Woop dee doo. Am I a bitch for feeling this way? Have you had issues like this?

So back to my original question: Do you hire friends? Why or why not?

I wouldn't.

I worked for a good friend of mine once, and watched other "friends" of his nearly steal him blind, even after I told him what was going on. That experience was enough to convince me that business should be business, friendship should be friendship and ne'er the twain should meet!

I did have a successful little enterprise with a friend — as equal partners. We bought, refurbished and resold computers. We both have a good work ethic, so it went well. I'd do something like that again, but I would NOT want a friend on my payroll, or to hire a friend to do work for me.

No way. Bad idea. As a daughter of restaurant owners, I've seen this go down bad. We've lost good customers that became employees because of it.

NO!!!!

I will never hire a friend or family member. Business is business, family and friends are for leisure time. It is a great way to ruin relationships!! I know many people who have hired friends and relatives and one person always felt used and taken advantage of...while the other person felt priveleged above other employees....not a good situation!

It depends on the friends. From knowing them I know which are slackers and terrible employee / co-workers. I don't vouch for that many people.

No! Never! I don't even let neighbors borrow my tools, been burnt once, once was enough.

It's usually not a good idea, as I've found out the hard way.

If it's someone who I know does good work and enjoys it, I'll at least consider them. It's worked out pretty well for me
